The programme covers AI fundamentals, prompt engineering, and practical Gemini applications. Schools will also establish a Gemini Academy and a Creative Hour, creating dedicated time for skill-building within the existing timetable.
This move marks one of the largest state-backed efforts to embed generative AI literacy into compulsory education. It places Google's consumer AI tools directly inside public school classrooms, a step that carries both opportunity and oversight questions.
Why Safety Lessons Start Before the Chatbot Opens
The curriculum does not stop at technical skills. Lessons on AI safety, ethics, and responsible use are built into the core syllabus. A separate Be Internet Aware programme will target younger students in Grades 6 to 8, widening the digital literacy net.
This sequencing matters. Students will learn how to evaluate AI outputs, understand bias, and recognize misuse before they are encouraged to rely on the tools for schoolwork. It is a deliberate attempt to avoid the pitfalls seen in other markets where AI entered classrooms without guardrails.
School heads retain control over scheduling. Gemini-related activities will happen during school hours, and any timetable changes require approval from the school head. That administrative layer is designed to prevent ad-hoc adoption and ensure accountability.
