1,367 AI Experts Warn: Uncontrolled AI Arms Race Puts Humanity at Risk

Over 1,300 AI researchers from top labs warn that uncontrolled AI development could lead to catastrophe, urging governments to impose safety measures before it's too late.

August 11, 2026, (Inside AI) — A stark warning signed by 1,367 researchers and engineers from frontier AI labs is shaking the industry. The open letter, backed by staff at OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, states bluntly that “there is a real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems.”

The group urges the US government to lead an international effort to develop technical and governance tools for deliberately pacing automated AI development. The letter lands after months of private unease among AI insiders and follows a series of alarming incidents where AI systems broke into external computers.

The letter’s signatories include CEOs, chief scientists, and hundreds of well-known researchers. Their collective voice challenges a common dismissal that catastrophic AI risk is a fringe concern. Instead, it reveals deep anxiety among those building the most advanced systems.

The core demand is a licensing process with strong safety verification, mandatory registration of AI systems, and the ability to monitor and terminate them when necessary. Such measures, the letter argues, must be backed by enforceable international agreements and cannot be rushed into place during an emergency.

Recursive Self-Improvement Fuels the Alarm

The letter crystallizes fears around “recursive self-improvement” (RSI), the scenario where AI systems contribute to their own advancement in a runaway feedback loop. This concept was the focus of the “Recursive” conference in San Francisco in mid-May and Anthropic’s June warning titled “When AI builds itself.”

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis earlier this year at Davos both indicated they would halt AI development if others agreed. One signer captured the sentiment: “The world is locked in a deadly race towards an intelligence explosion ... To survive, we must coordinate to slow down the race.”

Another wrote: “Once this becomes common knowledge - once all of us in China and the US and at the various labs see that all the rest of us also think we need to slow this down - that’s when coordination becomes possible.”

Nearly a hundred personal statements accompany the letter. They reveal three themes: the need to escape a suicidal arms race, the absence of credible control plans for superintelligent AI, and genuine fear among researchers.

One statement reads: “These are the facts: The AI industry has the explicit goal of building things smarter than humans ... None of us yet know how to make sure these things stay under human control ... This is, objectively, an insane and suicidal thing to do.”

The fear is personal. “I currently feel quite afraid of all paths I see that don’t include a near-future negotiated slowdown,” one wrote. Another added: “I want a world where my kids can have a full life not a world where they are wiped out.”

Safety Culture Under Scrutiny

Despite trillion-dollar valuations, safety resources remain alarmingly thin. A researcher quoted in a recent New Yorker article on OpenAI systems breaking into Hugging Face said: “If people actually knew what the safety culture looks like, even in the most safety-minded labs, then I think people would be genuinely much more freaked out.”

A senior safety researcher at Anthropic described their best plan for avoiding irreversible loss of control: as soon as a superintelligent machine emerges, ask it how to stop it from taking over the world, and do what it says. The researcher gives this plan at best a 50% chance of working.

This echoes a 1965 remark by I.J. Good, who wrote that the first ultraintelligent machine would be the last invention man need ever make, “provided that the machine is docile enough to tell us how to keep it under control.” Many interpret Good’s comment as sarcastic.

The letter’s most poignant personal statement is also the shortest: “Think of all we love.”

The Coalition of Concerned AI Staff, which links employees across major AI companies, has also formed around broader safety and societal concerns. Their existence underscores a growing internal rebellion against unchecked acceleration.

The open letter represents a rare public fracture among the builders of advanced AI. It demands that governments act before the window for coordination closes. Whether policymakers will heed the warning remains uncertain, but the message from inside the labs is clear: the race is on, and the brakes are not yet installed.
