US Power Use to Beat Record Highs in 2026 and 2027 as AI Use Surges, EIA Says

Record electricity demand is coming. The grid is not ready for what AI data centers will demand next.

September 10, 2026, (Inside AI) — U.S. electricity consumption is on track to shatter records in 2026 and 2027. The surge is fueled by data centers running artificial intelligence workloads and a nationwide shift toward electrification.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration released its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook on Wednesday. It projects total power demand will climb from 4,195 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025 to 4,270 billion kWh in 2026. Demand is expected to reach 4,349 billion kWh in 2027.

Data centers dedicated to AI and cryptocurrency are a primary driver. Homes and businesses are also using more electricity while burning less fossil fuel for heating and transportation.

Texas grid operators recently paused new data center connections. Still, the West South Central region leads national electricity sales growth. The EIA noted this regional dynamic in its forecast.

The forecast breaks down 2026 sales by sector. Residential consumers are expected to use 1,527 billion kWh. Commercial customers should reach 1,542 billion kWh. Industrial users are projected at 1,059 billion kWh.

Those numbers compare against historical peaks. Residential use hit 1,515 billion kWh in 2025. Commercial demand peaked at 1,493 billion kWh in 2025. Industrial consumption set its record of 1,064 billion kWh back in 2000.

The generation mix is shifting. Coal's share will slide from 17% in 2025 to 16% in 2026 and 14% in 2027. Natural gas will hold steady at 40% through 2027. Renewables will rise from about 24% in 2025 to 25% in 2026 and 27% in 2027. Nuclear power remains at 18%.

Grid Operators Face a New Demand Curve

This forecast signals a structural change for grid planning. Utilities historically built capacity for predictable seasonal peaks. AI data centers introduce constant, high-density loads that do not follow traditional demand patterns.

Grid operators now face pressure to expand transmission infrastructure quickly. The EIA's regional data shows growth concentrating in the West South Central area. That region includes Texas, where a pause on new data center connections has not stopped overall sales growth.

Natural gas remains the backbone of the power mix. The EIA projects gas sales for power generation will hit 36.8 billion cubic feet per day in 2026. That matches the all-time high set in 2024.

Residential gas sales are expected to fall to 12.5 bcfd in 2026. Commercial sales should drop to 9.5 bcfd. Industrial gas use is projected to rise to 23.9 bcfd.

These figures compare with historical records. Residential gas demand peaked at 14.3 bcfd in 1996. Commercial gas use set its high of 9.9 bcfd in 2025. Industrial gas demand hit 23.8 bcfd in 1973.

The Electrification Push Collides With AI Demand

The EIA outlook highlights a collision between two major trends. Electrification of heat and transport is reducing direct fossil fuel use. AI data centers are simultaneously increasing total electricity consumption.

This creates a paradox for decarbonization goals. Renewables are growing faster than coal is declining. But natural gas is not losing ground. The EIA expects gas to maintain its 40% share of generation through 2027.

Industry analysts have warned about this tension. Data center operators often sign long-term power purchase agreements for renewable energy. Yet grid reliability still depends on dispatchable gas generation during peak AI workloads.

The EIA's projections suggest coal will continue its long decline. But the pace is slower than many climate advocates want. Coal still accounts for 14% of generation in 2027 under this forecast.

Nuclear power remains flat. No major new reactors are expected online during the forecast period. Existing plants are running at high capacity factors, but they cannot absorb the new demand alone.

The data center boom is reshaping energy markets faster than policy can respond. The EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook provides a sobering baseline. It shows record demand arriving alongside a generation mix that still leans heavily on fossil fuels.
