July 24, 2026, (Inside AI) — Patreon is cutting 93 jobs, or 20% of its workforce, in a restructuring aimed at flattening management and sharpening focus on core priorities, CEO Jack Conte told employees in a memo today.
The layoffs, the company's largest since a 17% staff reduction in 2022, come as the creator-membership platform contends with a rapidly shifting tech landscape. Conte insisted the cuts are not about replacing humans with AI, even as he acknowledged the technology's profound impact.
"AI has fundamentally transformed the tech industry," Conte wrote, adding that the pace of change "has never been more intense."
Yet he directly addressed speculation that AI is displacing workers. "We are not making the above changes because we believe AI replaces humans," Conte said. He argued that AI cannot replicate "the creativity, judgment, detail orientation, or craftsmanship" of staff, nor "the desire for human connection" central to Patreon's mission.
The restructuring will flatten Patreon's organizational hierarchy and realign teams around the company's highest-priority initiatives. Conte described the move as "painful" but "necessary" to keep the company resilient.
Affected employees will receive at least 16 weeks of severance, plus an additional week per year of service, healthcare coverage through year-end, and a $1,500 stipend to replace company-issued laptops.
The layoffs follow Patreon's recent partnership with Cloudflare to block AI bots from scraping creators' content without permission. The company said it strengthened anti-scraping measures as AI data collection techniques grow more sophisticated, reflecting wider creator concerns about unauthorized use of their work in training generative AI systems.
