August 10, 2026, (Inside AI) — OpenAI is rolling out a new Premium seat tier for ChatGPT Business, giving heavy users 5x more usage than Standard seats and removing the five-hour usage limit. The move directly addresses the top request from enterprise customers: more capacity for ambitious projects without workflow interruptions.

Premium seats cost $125 per user per month ($100 annually), while Standard seats stay at $25 monthly ($20 annually). Workspace owners can mix both tiers, assigning Premium to power users and Standard to others, all within the same secure environment.

For a limited time, eligible workspace owners who sign up early get $100 in workspace credits (2,500 credits) per Premium seat, capped at $500 for five seats. The first 10,000 eligible customers qualify, and some may receive early access before general availability. The promotion ends August 20.

OpenAI says Premium seats unlock productivity for data-heavy tasks. Business owners can turn sales reports, customer feedback, and inventory data into operating plans. Marketers can build campaigns from customer insights, and developers can use Codex to build, test, and improve features across larger codebases.

If users hit a limit, businesses can add shared workspace credits managed by the owner. The tiered model gives teams flexibility without separate subscriptions or administrative complexity, OpenAI claims.

The hidden cost of AI seat licensing

While OpenAI frames Premium seats as a productivity unlock, the pricing reveals a familiar enterprise software play: charge more for power users. At $125 per user per month, Premium seats cost 5x the Standard rate but deliver 5x the usage, making the per-token cost identical. The real value is removing the five-hour cap, which forces users to pause work.

This tiered approach mirrors how companies like Salesforce and Microsoft price AI copilots, but OpenAI's credit system adds opacity. Workspace credits are a black box: how many credits does a typical task consume? Without transparent metrics, businesses may struggle to predict costs. Competitors like Anthropic's Claude Enterprise offer usage-based pricing with clearer token counts, potentially appealing to cost-conscious firms.

OpenAI's limited-time credit offer also raises questions. The $100 in credits per seat is a classic hook to drive adoption, but the August 20 deadline suggests urgency tactics. Early access for some customers adds a layer of exclusivity, yet it's unclear how OpenAI selects participants. This could frustrate teams left waiting.

What OpenAI didn't announce

Notably absent from the announcement: details on security, compliance, or administrative controls for Premium seats. ChatGPT Business already offers SOC 2 compliance and data encryption, but as usage scales, enterprises will demand granular permissions, audit logs, and data residency options. OpenAI's silence on these fronts may give pause to regulated industries.

Also missing is any mention of fine-tuning or custom model support for Premium users. Rivals like Google's Vertex AI and Amazon Bedrock let enterprises tailor models to proprietary data. If Premium seats are just more of the same generic ChatGPT, the value proposition weakens for specialized workflows.

Industry watchers note that OpenAI's move comes as enterprise AI spending faces scrutiny. A recent Gartner survey found that 45% of CIOs are reassessing AI budgets due to unclear ROI. By unbundling seats, OpenAI may win over teams with varied usage patterns, but it must prove that Premium seats drive measurable outcomes beyond just more chat time.

For now, the waitlist is open. Workspace owners can sign up with their account email to claim credits and potentially jump the line. The promotion's fine print is in OpenAI's help center, but the clock is ticking.
