October 2, 2026, (Inside AI) — Cloudflare has launched a Web Search API through its AI Gateway, partnering with search providers Ceramic.ai, Exa, and Linkup to give AI agents the ability to browse the internet without guessing URLs. The announcement, made during the company's Birthday Week, addresses a persistent inefficiency in agentic AI: when agents need live web data, they often guess URLs and make curl calls, leading to frequent 404 errors.
The new API integrates directly into inference pipelines, injecting fresh, structured web snippets into model context. This gives agents access to information beyond their training cut-off dates, a critical limitation for applications dealing with recent events, changing APIs, or fast-evolving news. The service is available through AI Gateway, a REST API, and Workers bindings, with native server tools coming soon.
Why Agents Need Grounded Intelligence
AI models are frozen at a point in time. They cannot know about new product releases, breaking news, or updated documentation unless that information is fed to them. This is why agents sometimes hallucinate or return outdated answers. Web search solves this by grounding responses in live data. For example, an agent building with Cloudflare developer tools would miss all the new products released during Birthday Week without web search. With the API, it can retrieve the latest documentation and releases instantly.
The launch also sets a new industry standard for crawler behavior. Cloudflare requires its web search partners to comply with its "Verified bots" requirements, meaning crawlers must identify themselves, respect robots.txt, and provide links to crawled content. This gives site owners transparency and control over how their content is used. The company says this is a net-positive for a fair internet, allowing creators to decide what happens with their data.

"We're extremely excited to be taking another step in setting the bar for what it means to be a good crawler on the Internet, and even more proud of the web search partners who have risen to the challenge to uphold these standards with us," a Cloudflare spokesperson said. "When you use web search on Cloudflare, you choose to consume search knowledge from operators committed to providing the transparency, control, and visibility that helps build a better Internet, by identifying their crawlers, respecting robots.txt, and providing the source of search results."
This move comes as AI companies face increasing scrutiny over how they scrape the web. Many publishers have complained about AI crawlers ignoring robots.txt and consuming content without compensation. Cloudflare's standards could pressure other search providers to follow suit. The company has been vocal about its bot policies, and this partnership extends those principles to AI search.
How Developers Can Integrate Web Search
Cloudflare's AI Gateway acts as a control plane for AI applications, offering observability, unified billing, security, and access controls. Web search calls show up in AI Gateway logs and draw down from AI Gateway credits. Cloudflare offers web search at list API pricing from partners without markup. It also supports Bring-Your-Own-Key (BYOK), so organizations can use their existing provider accounts. Partners supporting Zero Data Retention (ZDR) will be identified, ensuring data is not retained.
For developers using Cloudflare Workers, integration takes just a line of code. A standalone worker binding is also available for agents. For those making HTTP calls from backends or mobile apps, a standard REST endpoint accepts an AI Gateway authentication token and provider preference. Cloudflare is also building native Server Tools into AI Gateway, with web search as one of the first tools. This means developers won't need to define tools themselves; they will come built into the control plane.
The Web Search API is available today. Developers can try it via AI Gateway, the REST API, or the AI Playground. More details are in the developer docs.
This launch reflects a broader trend: AI agents are moving from static knowledge to dynamic, real-time interaction with the web. As agents become more autonomous, the ability to search and retrieve live information will be as fundamental as model inference itself. Cloudflare's entry into this space, with a focus on ethical crawling, could shape how the entire industry approaches web data for AI.
