The numbers are stark. A March report from the Royal Aeronautical Society found fewer than 10% of licensed aerospace engineers are under 30. But such efforts clash with a legacy of cost-cutting: many firms scrapped apprenticeship programmes years ago, replacing them with entry-level roles that lack long-term career development. The result is a record order backlog at giants like Boeing and Airbus, while expert engineers inch toward retirement.
Industry leaders pin hopes on emerging fields like flying taxis and sustainability to rebrand aerospace as innovative. The UK government is also tying defence investments—spurred by the war in Ukraine—to recruitment, highlighting projects like BAE Systems' Brontanax drone. Yet these initiatives may not bridge the perception gap. ADS reported that aerospace, defence, and security added £46.8 billion to the UK economy last year. But without a robust talent pipeline, that contribution could stall. Apprenticeship data from the UK government shows a 15% decline in engineering-related starts since 2019, even as AI-related course enrollments surged by over 200%. The industry's challenge is not just competing with Silicon Valley salaries but redefining its own narrative—showing that building the physical world of flight remains as cutting-edge as coding the next large language model.
At Farnborough, the roar of jets still inspired awe. But whether that awe translates into careers will depend on how quickly aerospace can adapt its recruitment playbook for an AI-dominated era.
