Burford Vice Chair Launches AI-Native Employment Law Firm FairPlay

A Burford Capital vice chair teams up with a former Pangea3 co-founder to launch FairPlay Law, betting that AI can transform how professionals negotiate employment agreements.

September 16, 2026, (Inside AI) — A vice chair at litigation finance giant Burford Capital has partnered with a former business associate to launch an "AI-native" law firm targeting employment negotiations and disputes. The venture, FairPlay Law, publicly launched on Wednesday alongside a separate technology and management services organization, FairPlay Global, which is backed by undisclosed investor capital.

The firm arrives amid a surge of new legal practices claiming to embed artificial intelligence at their core. At least 60 such firms now operate in the United States, according to an online directory maintained by legal technology entrepreneur Matt Pollins. The directory, launched earlier this year, tracks what Pollins calls "native AI law firms," though not all listed practices adopt that label.

FairPlay's co-founders, David Perla and Sanjay Kamlani, bring substantial legal industry credentials. Perla serves as vice chair at Burford and will remain in that role while leading FairPlay. Kamlani has advised law firms on innovation strategies. The two previously co-founded Pangea3, a legal outsourcing company that Thomson Reuters acquired in 2010 and later sold to Ernst & Young in 2019.

The new firm's model centers on providing data-driven tools for professionals navigating workplace matters. According to its founders, FairPlay handles offer letter negotiations, equity grants, severance packages, and other employment agreements. Prospective clients receive a free AI-generated report that analyzes their documents against FairPlay's proprietary platform before engaging further.

FairPlay's structure reflects a growing trend in legal services: pairing a law firm with a management services organization (MSO) that can accept outside investment. Law firms themselves remain largely prohibited from investor ownership under professional conduct rules. MSOs, by contrast, face no such restrictions, allowing capital to flow into the business side of legal operations.

Kamlani launched an earlier version of FairPlay last year, initially focused on developing the underlying technology. The public launch this week expands that effort into a full-service employment law practice.

The firm also eschews traditional hourly billing. Like other AI-focused legal ventures, FairPlay lists flat fees on its website, a pricing model that appeals to individual clients who might otherwise face unpredictable costs.

Kamlani said FairPlay does not compete with large corporate law firms representing businesses in labor and employment matters. He suggested that big firms may refer individual clients to FairPlay, positioning the venture as complementary rather than adversarial to established practices.

Perla declined to name the investors backing FairPlay Global. The opacity surrounding funding sources is common among MSO-affiliated law firms, where capital structures often remain private.

The launch adds to a broader reconfiguration of legal services delivery. Technology-enabled firms have proliferated over the past decade, promising faster turnaround and lower costs for routine legal work. Many have struggled to scale beyond niche markets or to convince clients that AI can match human judgment in complex negotiations.

FairPlay's focus on employment matters places it in a segment where document review and standard contract terms lend themselves to automation. Offer letters, severance agreements, and equity grants follow predictable patterns that AI systems can analyze against market benchmarks and legal requirements.

Whether the firm can translate that technical capability into sustained client relationships remains uncertain. The legal industry has seen numerous attempts to disrupt traditional practice, with mixed results. Pangea3 itself, despite its acquisition by Thomson Reuters, was eventually divested, suggesting that even well-funded legal innovation faces challenges in achieving long-term viability.

For now, FairPlay represents another data point in the ongoing experiment to determine where artificial intelligence genuinely improves legal outcomes and where it merely repackages existing services. The firm's founders have staked their reputations on the former proposition.
