September 1, 2026, (Inside AI) — Anthropic has signed a cloud-computing deal worth $35 billion with Lambda, a cloud provider backed by Nvidia, according to a source familiar with the matter. The agreement will bring online Nvidia capacity to meet growing demand for Anthropic’s Claude AI.

The deal, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, marks one of the largest cloud contracts in the AI sector. It positions Lambda as a critical infrastructure partner for Anthropic as the startup scales its AI models against rivals like OpenAI and Google.

Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Lambda declined to comment. Neither company has publicly confirmed the terms, and Inside AI could not independently verify the exact financial details.

The $35 billion commitment dwarfs many previous AI infrastructure deals. It signals that Anthropic expects explosive growth in demand for Claude, its family of large language models. The deal also deepens Nvidia’s indirect influence, as Lambda’s cloud services rely heavily on Nvidia GPUs.

Lambda has emerged as a key player in the AI cloud market. The company operates data centers optimized for machine learning workloads and offers access to Nvidia’s latest chips, including the H100 and H200 series. Its backing by Nvidia gives it preferential access to scarce GPU supply, a critical advantage in a market where hardware shortages remain common.

The deal comes amid a broader race to secure AI compute. In 2025, Microsoft and Amazon each committed tens of billions of dollars to expand data center capacity for AI training and inference. Anthropic itself has previously relied on Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services, but this new agreement with Lambda diversifies its infrastructure base.

Industry analysts note that cloud contracts of this size are typically multi-year agreements. They often include committed spending thresholds, reserved capacity, and technical support services. The $35 billion figure likely represents total spending over the life of the deal, not an upfront payment.

The timing is significant. Anthropic recently released Claude 4, which the company claims outperforms competing models on several benchmarks. Demand for inference, the process of running trained models to answer user queries, has surged. Inference workloads require continuous GPU availability, making long-term cloud contracts essential.

Nvidia’s role as both a Lambda investor and a hardware supplier raises questions about competitive dynamics. Some critics argue that Nvidia’s dominance in AI chips gives it outsized influence over the cloud market. However, Lambda’s CEO, Stephen Balaban, has said that his company remains neutral and serves any customer that needs compute.

“We are building the cloud for AI, not for any single AI company,” Balaban said in a previous interview. “Our goal is to make high-performance computing accessible to everyone.”

The Anthropic deal could accelerate Lambda’s expansion. The company has been adding data center capacity in the United States and Europe. It recently raised funding at a valuation exceeding $10 billion, according to sources familiar with its finances.

For Anthropic, the deal reduces reliance on hyperscalers that also compete in AI. Google and Amazon have their own AI models, creating potential conflicts of interest. Lambda, by contrast, does not develop foundation models, making it a neutral partner.

The $35 billion agreement also highlights the staggering economics of modern AI. Training and serving frontier models requires thousands of GPUs running continuously. Energy costs alone can reach hundreds of millions of dollars per year for a single large model.

Regulators may scrutinize the deal. The Federal Trade Commission has been investigating cloud provider relationships with AI startups. Concerns include exclusive dealing and preferential pricing. However, no regulatory action has been announced in connection with this agreement.

The news sent ripples through the AI investment community. Shares of Nvidia rose slightly in pre-market trading, according to market data. Analysts expect Lambda to pursue an initial public offering within the next two years, and a marquee customer like Anthropic would strengthen its financial profile.

Anthropic’s annualized revenue reportedly surpassed $2 billion in 2025, driven by enterprise adoption of Claude. The company has positioned itself as a safety-focused alternative to OpenAI, emphasizing responsible AI development.

The Lambda deal could enable Anthropic to offer lower-latency responses and higher throughput for Claude users. It may also support new features such as real-time video analysis and agentic workflows, which require more compute per interaction.

As AI competition intensifies, infrastructure access has become a strategic weapon. Companies that secure long-term GPU supply can outpace rivals in model updates and service reliability. The Anthropic-Lambda agreement is a clear signal that the AI arms race is far from over.
