Punjab Makes AI a Core Subject for All Government School Students

July 26, 2026, (Inside AI) — Punjab has become the first Indian state to mandate Artificial Intelligence as a core subject across all government schools from Class 1 to Class 12, effective immediately. The policy, announced by School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, integrates AI into the mainstream curriculum alongside Mathematics and Science, covering over 25,000 schools and nearly 31.5 lakh students.

The move aims to prepare students for a workforce where the International Monetary Fund warns nearly 40% of jobs will be affected by AI. Bains stated the decision was driven by a widening skills gap, noting that computer education in Punjab had stagnated with outdated tools like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint while nations like China and South Korea advanced AI education from primary levels.

"If India is to become a developed, self-reliant nation by 2047, we cannot afford to let our children fall behind while the rest of the world races ahead." Harjot Singh Bains, Cabinet Minister for School Education, Punjab.

The curriculum is phased: Classes 1-5 focus on responsible AI use and digital citizenship; Classes 6-7 introduce building with AI; Classes 8-9 involve creating AI modules for community problems; and Classes 11-12 produce industry-standard projects with partners like Google, Amazon, Canva, and Intel. Over 90% of the curriculum is practical, moving away from rote learning.

Punjab’s education reforms under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann laid the groundwork. The state rose from 27th to 1st in NITI Aayog’s School Education Quality Report, backed by a ₹2,500 crore infrastructure investment and 100% Wi-Fi connectivity in government schools. This year, 882 students qualified for NEET, double from two years ago, with Aryan Gupta securing All India Rank 1.

To deliver AI education, over 12,000 computer faculty are being trained as AI teachers, with nearly two lakh other teachers to follow. AI textbooks will reach schools within 15 days, and AI will be part of academic records and board certification.

Global AI Education Race Leaves No Room for Delay

Punjab’s policy mirrors a global shift. China began mandating AI education in 2025, and South Korea integrates advanced tech concepts early. The IMF’s analysis underscores the urgency, as AI disrupts labor markets. Bains recounted a telling experience at India’s AI summit in Delhi, where a university showcased a purchased robot as innovation amid poor Wi-Fi, reinforcing his belief that AI readiness must be built from schools upward.

However, challenges loom. Critics question whether a rapid rollout can ensure quality, especially in rural areas with varying teacher preparedness. The reliance on corporate partnerships also raises concerns about curriculum influence. Yet, Punjab’s track record of infrastructure improvement provides a foundation. The state’s approach aligns with NITI Aayog’s School Education Quality Index findings on systemic reform.

From Annadata to Bhavishyadata: Punjab’s Bet on AI

Bains framed the initiative as Punjab evolving from India’s “Annadata” (food provider) to “Bhavishyadata” (future shaper). The policy’s scale—covering every government school from border villages to urban centers—aims to democratize AI education. Yet, implementation details on assessment, language barriers, and digital divide remain sparse. The state’s partnership with tech giants could accelerate learning, but long-term sustainability hinges on continuous teacher development and curriculum updates, as noted in UNESCO’s guidance on AI in education.

As other Indian states observe, Punjab’s experiment could set a precedent. Bains expressed confidence that many will follow. For now, the focus is on execution—transforming classrooms into AI labs where students build solutions for village panchayats or family businesses, turning a policy announcement into tangible outcomes.
