Anthropic’s Claude and xAI’s Grok also experienced simultaneous failures, according to Downdetector data. Some users reported intermittent problems with Google Gemini as well, though Google has not issued a formal statement.
Shared Cloud Backbone Points to Single Point of Failure
The concurrent nature of the outages suggests a common infrastructure dependency. All three services rely on Microsoft Azure for cloud computing, and Azure itself showed a spike in outage reports during the same window. This correlation indicates the root cause may lie in Azure’s infrastructure rather than the AI models themselves.
Azure’s status page showed no major incident declared at the time, but third-party monitoring tools detected elevated error rates across multiple Azure regions. A Microsoft spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Industry analysts have long warned about concentration risk in cloud services. A single provider failure can cascade across numerous AI platforms, as seen in previous incidents involving Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud.
Users Report Bizarre Behavior Beyond Simple Downtime
Some ChatGPT visitors experienced unusual symptoms beyond a blank screen. Users reported the site attempting to download an unexpected file, a behavior that could indicate a misconfigured edge server or corrupted response from the backend.
One user on social media described the file as having no recognizable extension. Security researchers cautioned against opening such files, as they could potentially contain malicious payloads if an attacker exploited the outage window.
OpenAI has not commented on the file download reports. The company’s status page continued to show degraded performance for Codex, its code-generation model, alongside ChatGPT.
