July 30, 2026, (Inside AI) — OpenAI is rolling out a new program to give 100,000 academic researchers free access to its most advanced AI models, starting with 10,000 slots this summer at institutions like the Institute for Advanced Study and École normale supérieure.
The initiative, called ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, aims to accelerate discovery across sciences, mathematics, and engineering by putting frontier models directly into the hands of scholars. Participants will gain access to the GPT‑5.6 family, including the top-tier GPT‑5.6 Sol Pro, along with tools like Codex and ChatGPT Work.
“We believe the benefits of frontier AI should not be concentrated in a few companies and well-resourced labs,” OpenAI stated. The program includes business-grade privacy protections, with data not used for model training by default, and allows researchers to invite up to four collaborators.
This move comes as AI adoption in research surges. OpenAI reports that roughly 1.3 million people use ChatGPT weekly for advanced science and math, generating about 8.4 million messages. In mathematics, AI has shifted from occasional use to a regular research tool, with a growing number of papers acknowledging ChatGPT’s contributions.
Models Tailored for Research Intensity
The program offers three model tiers: GPT‑5.6 Terra for everyday tasks, GPT‑5.6 Luna for faster, lighter work, and GPT‑5.6 Sol for the hardest problems. On FrontierMath Tier 4, GPT‑5.6 Sol scores 83%, up from 72.5% for GPT‑5.5. On GeneBench Pro, it solves 31.5% of tasks involving complex biological data analysis.
Researchers can tap over 75 life science skills spanning genetics, protein modeling, and drug discovery, plus connectors to scientific databases and literature. Codex aids in coding and reproducible workflows, while ChatGPT Work supports grant writing and manuscript preparation.
OpenAI’s strategy is not to dictate research directions. “Our role is to put powerful tools in their hands—and work alongside them to design models that accelerate their research while keeping them in control,” the company said.
Early use cases show promise. Physicist Rogerio Jorge and his team are building open-source fusion energy software. In theoretical computer science, researchers Barna Saha, Yinzhan Xu, and Christopher Ye used GPT‑5.5 Pro to prove new limits on computational efficiency for high-dimensional geometry problems.
Data suggests that the most intensive AI users tackle more ambitious work. Those in the top 20% of AI usage in their field are nearly twice as likely to request tasks estimated at four hours or more: 7% of their requests versus 3.5% for peers.
Training and a Quarter-Billion-Dollar Bet
The program includes tailored training, from beginner workflows to advanced applications, and access to specialists for integration support. OpenAI also plans to foster a community where researchers share practical approaches and feedback to refine the models.
This effort is part of a broader $250 million commitment through 2027 to external scientific research, including the $50 million NextGenAI initiative and work with the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission. The latter aims to bring frontier AI to national labs and universities.
Eligible institutions must be recognized, degree-granting colleges or universities with high research activity. Applicants verify their affiliation and describe their research plans. Approved researchers can invite up to four collaborators, who also must verify their status.
