June 22, 2026, (Inside AI) — The Sabarimala temple in Kerala will deploy AI-based crowd management systems for the upcoming pilgrimage season starting in November. The Travancore Devaswom Board and Kerala Police met with an expert committee on Saturday to review proposals from three AI firms.
AI-Powered Surveillance for a Forest Shrine
Pathanamthitta district police superintendent R Anand said AI will be introduced in phases. The system aims to improve crowd control, inter-departmental coordination, and pilgrim safety.
"AI-enabled crowd management has been effectively used in the Maha Kumbh Mela and other festivals with large gatherings. Sabarimala requires tailor-made AI solutions, considering that the temple is situated within a dense forest. We are planning to deploy the system in a phased manner in the coming season," he said.
Predictive Analytics and Real-Time Alerts
The technology will include AI cameras, drones, and GIS mapping. Video feeds will be analyzed to predict crowd density and congestion. A control room will receive frequent alerts, and personnel on duty will get instant notifications via digital devices.
This real-time data promises faster issue resolution. The system also forecasts crowd movement, helping authorities act before bottlenecks form.
Addressing Unique Pilgrimage Challenges
Last year, the shrine saw 51 lakh devotees. The dense forest location complicates traditional crowd management. The AI system will manage movement from 26 parking grounds and help trace missing persons without human intervention.
"It will ensure safe and hassle-free darshan for the devotees; people who go missing at the shrine can be easily traced; and movement of pilgrims from 26 parking grounds can be managed without human intervention. This will also ease the heavy load on police personnel deployed at the shrine during the festival," Anand added.
Virtual Queue Stays, AI Enhances It
Pilgrims currently use a virtual queue system, booking time slots online. Despite this, waits of several hours occur at camps. The AI system will not replace the virtual queue but will optimize crowd flow to reduce delays.
Officials clarified the virtual queue will continue. The AI layer adds predictive muscle to an existing digital framework, potentially cutting wait times.
Lessons from Past Deployments
India has tested AI crowd management at large events like the Kumbh Mela. However, Sabarimala’s terrain and religious sensitivity demand custom solutions. Privacy advocates often question surveillance in sacred spaces, but officials emphasize safety and efficiency.
No timeline was given for full deployment. The phased rollout suggests a cautious approach, learning from each stage before expanding.
What’s Next for Temple Tech
The expert committee will evaluate the proposals from Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai firms. A final vendor selection and pilot phase are expected before the season begins. Success here could set a precedent for other pilgrimage sites across India.
