September 10, 2026, (Inside AI) — Wipro's artificial intelligence push has freed up productivity equal to the output of 20,000 employees, all of whom have been redeployed across the company, according to its chief technology officer.
The disclosure signals how India's $315 billion software services sector is absorbing AI without immediate mass layoffs. Wipro employed about 243,000 people in June.
Sandhya Arun, Wipro's CTO, said the company now runs a 'human-AI operating model.' More than 100,000 employees have completed advanced AI training and certifications.

Her remarks echo Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji's public statements from last week. Premji has argued that AI should augment rather than replace human workers.
India's IT Giants Rebalance Humans And Agents
Wipro is not alone. Tata Consultancy Services said in June that hiring would slow as it moves toward an equal number of employees and AI agents. TCS plans up to 8,900 forward-deployed engineers; Infosys targets about 6,000.
These engineers embed directly with clients to speed up AI adoption. Wipro is expanding its own forward-deployed pool but declined to give a specific target. Arun said the number would likely align with peers.
She cautioned against fixating on job titles. The real test is whether every engineer learns to work effectively with AI systems.

Arun argued that AI should be judged on customer experience, new revenue opportunities, and business goals, not just output metrics.
Revenue Disclosure Remains A Blind Spot
Wipro is the only top-four Indian IT firm that does not disclose AI-specific revenue. That opacity makes independent verification difficult.
Manoj Chandra Jha, principal analyst at Nord-IQ Research, said Wipro is still in the cost-absorbing phase of AI monetization. The real test will come when deals convert to revenue and margin recovery.
Jha added that Wipro's investment intensity in AI training and ecosystem partnerships is comparable with TCS, Infosys, and HCLTech. But Wipro trails in commercialization maturity.
The company's redeployment strategy suggests AI is changing roles faster than headcount. Whether that holds as AI agents grow more capable remains an open question.
