September 17, 2026, (Inside AI) — Anthropic announced today that it is merging its Claude Cowork and chat products into a single Claude experience, eliminating the need for users to decide where a task belongs. The move, rolling out to Pro and Max plans over the next few weeks, also introduces Claude Docs and Claude Slides, two new tools that let users create documents and presentations directly within conversations. Claude Design, previously a standalone product, now works inside chats as well.

The consolidation addresses a common complaint: users were frustrated by having to choose between Cowork for bigger work and chat for quick questions, and context did not carry between them. Now, Claude can determine what a task requires, making Cowork and Design capabilities available from any conversation, with existing context, skills, and connectors.

"I could have Claude pull up [my legal research database], and it would pull all the cases, read them, figure out which other cases I might need, download them, and store them in a folder for my personal review." - Andrew Keller, Senior Economist

The new features are in beta on paid plans, with Enterprise admins controlling when to enable them. Existing Claude Design standalone users will see no change. The rollout begins on web, desktop, and mobile for Pro and Max users, with Team and Free plans to follow. Enterprise customers will receive at least 30 days' notice before any changes affect their organizations.

This unification reflects a broader trend in AI assistants: reducing friction by integrating specialized tools into a single interface. Anthropic's move follows similar consolidations by competitors like OpenAI, which recently merged its ChatGPT plugins into a unified experience. By allowing Claude to handle both quick queries and complex projects seamlessly, Anthropic aims to boost productivity and user retention.

Claude Docs and Slides enable collaborative document and presentation creation. Users can ask for a document and write it together with Claude, or request a presentation and have Claude draft slides. Edits can be made directly, presented from Claude, or downloaded as PowerPoint or PDF. All outputs share a single link accessible on any device.

The system also offers flexible oversight: by default, Claude asks before taking actions, but users can opt for autonomous operation with check-ins only when needed. This balance between automation and control may appeal to professionals handling sensitive tasks.

For current Cowork users, all chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills remain intact. The transition requires no action. The full capabilities list is available in the Help Center.

Anthropic's latest update underscores the growing expectation that AI tools should adapt to user workflows, not the other way around. As the lines between chat and work assistants blur, the company is betting that simplicity and continuity will drive adoption.
