October 1, 2026, (Inside AI) — Google's AI Overviews now appear on 93% of branded search queries, according to independent testing by SEO analyst Chris Long. The feature, which generates AI summaries above organic results, has expanded aggressively into searches for company names like Reddit, Salesforce, Amazon, Adobe, Apple, Samsung, Motorola, and Yahoo. Data from search analytics firm DemandSphere shows branded query AI Overviews tripled in September alone, signaling a deliberate acceleration after a temporary pause in August.

The timing reveals a calculated strategy. Google first launched AI Overviews broadly in May 2026 for general queries, but the rollout triggered immediate backlash over hallucinations and misinformation. The company paused the feature in August following the Hugging Face breach and mounting public criticism. By late September, Google not only resumed the feature but expanded it into the most sensitive search territory: brand queries where users explicitly seek official company information.

Brand-specific searches differ fundamentally from general queries. When users search "Apple" or "Samsung," they typically want the official website, product details, and company information. These queries convert directly to website traffic and customer engagement. Google's AI Overviews now intercept these journeys by providing synthesized answers before users click organic links. The official Apple or Samsung page still appears on the results page, but the AI summary has already captured attention and trust.

The traffic displacement mechanism is ruthless. An AI Overview answers "What is Adobe" or "Who is Amazon" without requiring users to leave Google. They find the information they sought immediately. Why click through? The official brand pages remain on the results page, but positioned below the AI-generated answer layer. Casual searchers satisfied by the overview never reach brand websites. Only users seeking deeper information or looking to purchase will click through.

For major brands with massive awareness, the impact is manageable. Apple users will still find their way to apple.com. However, mid-market brands relying on search visibility face genuine traffic threats. Smaller brands optimizing for brand-name search rank find their traffic diverted before achieving clicks. The cumulative effect is systematic: Google captures user attention at the summary layer, and brands receive diminished traffic for queries explicitly mentioning their names.

Google's approach reflects evolved business priorities. The company maintains publisher relationships while simultaneously training AI systems on publisher content and diverting user traffic away from those same publishers and brands. Google benefits from content creation, AI training data, and user engagement on its own properties. Publishers and brands lose direct customer access.

For the month of September, the numbers tripling suggest this is not experimental anymore. Google moved aggressively from testing AI Overviews to mass deployment on the most valuable search real estate: branded queries. Brands will need to adapt their entire search strategies around the reality that Google now owns the top answer layer for searches mentioning their names.
