November 2, 2026, (Inside AI) — The European Central Bank has flagged elevated valuations in artificial intelligence stocks, stress in bond markets, and potential losses at shadow banks as the most pressing threats to financial stability, according to ECB Vice-President Boris Vujcic. Speaking in Frankfurt on Monday, Vujcic previewed the central bank's findings ahead of its biannual Financial Stability Review, scheduled for publication on November 18.

The warning arrives as AI-related equities continue to command premium multiples across global markets. The ECB's decision to name AI valuations first among its concerns signals that supervisors now view the technology trade as a systemic channel, not merely a sectoral story. The central bank's review will land two weeks before its final policy meeting of the year, giving investors a formal framework for how eurozone regulators assess the risk.

Vujcic's remarks place three distinct vulnerabilities on the same list. High AI stock prices matter because a sharp repricing could transmit losses through funds, pension vehicles, and retail portfolios. Bond market stress matters because it affects sovereign financing costs and bank balance sheets. Shadow bank losses matter because non-bank lenders now sit at the center of eurozone credit intermediation, often with limited public backstops.

"The European Central Bank has identified high valuations for AI stocks, stress in the bond market and potential losses at shadow banks as the main risks to financial stability at present," Vujcic said.

The timing is notable. European regulators have spent much of the past year debating how to supervise the growing footprint of private credit and non-bank financial intermediaries. The ECB has repeatedly warned that these entities can amplify shocks rather than absorb them. Naming shadow banks alongside AI valuations suggests supervisors see a possible link: if AI-linked assets fall, leveraged non-bank funds could face margin calls and forced selling.

AI valuations have drawn scrutiny from multiple quarters. The Bank for International Settlements and the International Monetary Fund have both cautioned that concentrated equity gains tied to a handful of technology firms could reverse quickly. The ECB's contribution adds a eurozone-specific lens, focusing on how European banks and funds are exposed to a trade largely priced in U.S. markets.

The bond market component reflects a separate set of pressures. Eurozone sovereign spreads have widened at points this year as governments increase issuance to fund defense and energy transition spending. Any renewed stress in that market would collide with the ECB's own balance sheet runoff, limiting its room to intervene without appearing to finance governments.

The Financial Stability Review on November 18 will provide the full data behind Vujcic's summary. Until then, his remarks serve as a signal that the ECB's risk hierarchy has shifted. AI is no longer treated as a productivity story alone. It is now a valuation risk with potential balance sheet consequences.

Market participants will watch whether the review quantifies European bank exposure to AI-linked equities or non-bank funds. The ECB has not disclosed those figures publicly. The central bank's earlier reviews have included stress-test scenarios for investment funds, and the November edition may extend that work to AI-heavy portfolios.

For now, the message from Frankfurt is clear. The ECB sees three pressure points converging, and it wants the public and the markets to know before the full report arrives.
