June 17, 2026, (Inside AI) — Anthropic faces a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging it misled subscribers about usage limits on its premium Claude Max plans, which cost $100 and $200 per month. The suit was filed Monday in the Northern District of California by Washington D.C.-based user Karl Kahn, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Premium Promises Meet Throttled Reality
The lawsuit challenges Anthropic’s marketing of Claude Max 5x at $100 monthly and Max 20x at $200 monthly. These tiers promise five and twenty times the token allowance of the base Claude Pro subscription at $20 per month. Yet the complaint alleges actual usage falls far short of those multipliers.
Kahn upgraded to the Max 20x plan in April after adopting Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding tool. He quickly hit weekly limits. One five-hour coding session consumed 15% of his entire weekly allowance, the suit states.
Opaque Metrics and Shifting Limits
The lawsuit claims Anthropic sent emails outlining expected token allowances, then adjusted those limits after purchase without clear communication. It also argues Anthropic’s usage disclosures are vague, stating only that message limits “will vary based on message length” and other factors.
Subscribers lack a way to audit actual consumption. The complaint says the pricing model makes it nearly impossible to determine how and where tokens are consumed.
Kahn seeks class-action status for all Claude Max subscribers since the plans launched in April 2025. Anthropic introduced the tier to address complaints from Claude Pro users who felt constantly throttled.
A Pileup of Pressures
The case lands during a difficult stretch for Anthropic. Days earlier, the US government forced the company to suspend public access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 over national security concerns. Amazon reportedly flagged security concerns about the models to federal officials.
Anthropic is also navigating a $1.5 billion class-action copyright settlement over allegations it trained models on pirated content. The company declined to comment on the lawsuit.
Industry-Wide Subscription Strain
Anthropic is not alone in facing scrutiny over AI subscription economics. Unlike Netflix or Spotify, where serving an extra customer costs little, every AI prompt consumes real computing resources. This creates persistent tension around usage-based pricing.
Google responded by publishing hard daily prompt limits for Gemini. OpenAI and Perplexity offer comparable $100 to $200 monthly tiers facing similar usage pressure. The lawsuit may test how far AI companies can stretch subscription promises against opaque compute costs.
