Samsung Electronics Launches Robotics Division in South Korea to Drive Growth

The move, announced Tuesday in Seoul, aims to accelerate robotics development and commercialization as a core growth engine for the South Korean tech giant.

The new unit will oversee mid-to-long-term strategy, core technology development, and business execution. Samsung also plans to expand robotics research capabilities both domestically and internationally, signaling a serious push into a field it has long eyed but never fully committed to as a standalone business pillar.

This restructuring elevates robotics from a scattered set of projects to a C-suite priority. Samsung has dabbled in robots for years—from its Ballie home companion concept to industrial exoskeletons—but the RX division marks its most formalized bet yet. Unlike competitors such as LG Electronics or Hyundai (which acquired Boston Dynamics), Samsung has historically approached robotics with caution. Now, it’s signaling a shift from experimentation to execution.

The decision comes as global robotics investment surges. The International Federation of Robotics reported that worldwide installations of industrial robots hit 517,000 units in 2024, with service robot sales growing 37% year-over-year. Samsung’s move positions it to capture value across both industrial and consumer segments—areas where its expertise in semiconductors, AI, and manufacturing could converge.

Why Now? The Convergence of AI, Chips, and Labor Shifts

Samsung’s timing isn’t accidental. Three forces are reshaping the robotics landscape. First, advances in generative AI and vision models have made robots more adaptable. Second, Samsung’s own chip division—the world’s largest memory maker—can supply the high-bandwidth memory crucial for robotic processing. Third, labor shortages in manufacturing and logistics, especially in South Korea’s aging workforce, create immediate demand.

“Robotics is no longer a science project,” said Dr. Kim Sang-bae, a professor at KAIST and former robotics researcher at MIT. “With AI, we’re seeing robots that can learn tasks in hours, not months. Samsung’s scale could accelerate commercialization faster than many pure-play robotics firms.”

Yet Samsung faces steep competition. Tesla’s Optimus humanoid is in early production testing. Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics continues to refine its Atlas and Spot platforms. And LG has been rolling out service robots for hotels and hospitals. Samsung’s advantage may lie in vertical integration: its own chips, displays, sensors, and AI models could give it cost and performance edges.

What the RX Division Means for Samsung’s Portfolio

The RX division will likely focus on three areas: industrial automation (factory robots for Samsung’s own manufacturing lines and external clients), service robotics (retail, logistics, and healthcare), and consumer robotics (home assistants and companions). Samsung’s existing investments in Rainbow Robotics—a South Korean firm in which it holds a 14.99% stake—may serve as a foundation for collaborative robots, or cobots.

Analysts note that Samsung’s robotics push could also bolster its SmartThings ecosystem. Imagine a robot vacuum that not only cleans but also monitors home security, syncs with appliances, and learns household routines. That vision, however, requires solving hard problems in navigation, manipulation, and safety—areas where Samsung has filed hundreds of patents but delivered few commercial products.

The company’s R&D spending hit $23 billion in 2025, with a growing portion allocated to AI and robotics. By centralizing robotics under the CEO, Samsung aims to cut through internal bureaucracy that has historically slowed new ventures. “This isn’t just about building a better robot arm,” said Park Ji-hoon, a Seoul-based tech analyst. “It’s about creating a platform that spans hardware, software, and services—much like they did with smartphones.”

Still, challenges remain. Robotics is a capital-intensive, low-margin business in the near term. Samsung’s success will depend on whether it can leverage its manufacturing prowess to drive down costs while delivering reliability. The RX division’s first major product reveal is expected at CES 2027, where Samsung traditionally showcases its tech ambitions.

For now, the message from Seoul is clear: robotics is no longer a side project. It’s a pillar of Samsung’s future growth, and the company is betting its vertical integration can turn a fragmented industry into a competitive moat.
