The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta is moving to launch an AI-first Online MBA for working professionals, a proposal that will go before the institute's Academic Council for approval. The two-year blended programme is designed to let professionals earn a full MBA without pausing their careers.

Graduates will receive the same Master of Business Administration degree as the flagship on-campus offering and gain full lifetime IIM Calcutta alumni status. The curriculum, built by IIM Calcutta faculty, will be delivered through the institute's own online learning platform with artificial intelligence woven into every management discipline.

The programme spans six terms over two years, extendable to three, with over 600 hours of credit-bearing instruction. The first year covers foundational courses, while the second year offers electives for specialization. Three AI Labs will have student teams tackling live industry projects judged by academic and industry panels.

Other components include five campus immersion modules at the Joka campus, a mandatory international immersion at a Singapore business school focused on sustainability or AI, and a 24-month executive leadership coaching programme with periodic assessments.

Prof Alok Kumar Rai, Director of IIM Calcutta, said the proposed programme aims to extend the rigour of an IIM Calcutta MBA to professionals who cannot leave their careers while integrating artificial intelligence into management education.

Admission requires a bachelor's degree and at least three years of full-time work experience, with preference for five or more years. Applicants need a valid CAT, GMAT, or GRE score followed by a personal interview. Live online classes will run Thursday to Sunday, enabling full-time employment alongside study.

Details on fees, intake size, admission schedule, and the international partner will be announced after Academic Council approval. The move reflects a growing trend among top business schools to embed AI deeply into management curricula, as industries demand leaders fluent in data-driven decision-making.

A 2022 AACSB report highlighted that business schools worldwide are integrating AI to prepare graduates for a tech-centric economy. IIM Calcutta's initiative aligns with this shift, positioning itself at the forefront of AI-integrated management education in India.

While the programme promises flexibility and prestige, questions remain about the efficacy of online delivery for a traditionally immersive MBA experience. However, the inclusion of in-person immersions and live projects aims to bridge that gap. The international immersion in Singapore adds a global dimension, crucial for professionals eyeing cross-border roles.

As AI reshapes industries, this programme could serve as a model for how elite institutions adapt their flagship degrees for the digital age without diluting their value. The Academic Council's decision will be closely watched by both academia and the corporate world.
