August 27, 2026, (Inside AI) — ChatGPT users in India will see sponsored messages inside their conversations starting this week. OpenAI is expanding its advertising program to one of its largest markets, with ads appearing for all users above 18 on the Free and Go tiers.

Paid subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will not see ads. OpenAI also said ads will not appear alongside sensitive topics such as mental health or politics.

The rollout makes India the third major region to get ChatGPT Ads, after the United States and Europe. The move signals how aggressively OpenAI is pursuing advertising revenue while trying to preserve user trust.

Ad Model Bets on High-Context Moments

Ads will be labeled as sponsored and appear below AI-generated responses only when a relevant product or service exists. OpenAI insists the ads will not alter ChatGPT’s answers.

The company has partnered with ad agencies WPP and Omnicom to launch campaigns from over 50 brands this week. The partnership is non-exclusive, and OpenAI said it will work with other agencies soon.

Businesses can use a self-serve ads manager starting September 4, 2026. Daily budgets begin at Rs 725. OpenAI framed the ad program as a way for Indian businesses to reach people while they are exploring options or comparing choices.

“With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of every size can introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape,” Dave Dugan, Vice President and Head of Global Ads Solutions, OpenAI, said in a statement.

“Our goal is to make those interactions useful, help marketers design for intelligent experiences, and preserve what makes ChatGPT valuable: independent answers, conversations that stay private from advertisers, and meaningful user control,” he added.

Privacy Rules Draw a Hard Line

OpenAI said it will not sell user data or expose conversations to advertisers. Advertisers will not see a user’s age, location, or interests. They will only receive aggregate campaign performance data such as impressions and clicks.

Users can dismiss ads, give feedback, and see why an ad was shown. ChatGPT’s personalization feature, which lets users ask the chatbot to remember traits and hobbies, may inform ad targeting. OpenAI said users can turn off personalization and clear ad data at any time.

The ad launch follows a testing pilot in the US in February 2026. Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews already show ads, proving advertising remains attractive in the AI era. Anthropic has taken the opposite stance, vowing that Claude will remain ad-free.

India has over 100 million weekly active users on ChatGPT. It was among the first markets to get ChatGPT Go, the Rs 399 per month plan offered free for one year to eligible users. Advertising revenue, OpenAI said, supports continued investment in free and affordable AI tools.
