October 5, 2026, (Inside AI) — OpenAI will begin testing visual advertisements inside ChatGPT's image generation feature later this month, marking the company's first move beyond text-based promotions on its flagship platform. The pilot launches in the United States with a limited group of advertisers, according to an announcement from the company.

The new format places static images inside the image creation workflow. These ads will carry clear labels and remain separate from any picture a user generates. OpenAI says the advertising will not influence the answers ChatGPT provides, a claim the company has repeated since launching its ad platform.

The stakes are substantial. ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion people every week, making it the largest consumer platform built natively around artificial intelligence. Advertising gives OpenAI a way to serve a market far wider than paying subscribers alone. It also gives brands a new channel to reach people at the moment they explore ideas, compare options, and decide what to buy.

Measurement Partners Aim To Prove Ad Impact

OpenAI is expanding its measurement infrastructure alongside the visual format. New integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp will let advertisers send conversion data from their existing systems directly into ChatGPT Ads.

The company has also added attribution partners across web and app environments. These include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin. Full-funnel and advanced measurement partners include Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL.

Early partner data suggests the ads perform well for some brands. According to DV Rockerbox, WeightWatchers recorded an attributed cost per acquisition on ChatGPT Ads that was 15.3% lower than its blended paid-search benchmark. WorkMagic reported statistically significant lift for wellness brand Dose, with 67% of incremental purchases coming from net-new customers. Triple Whale found that 93% of Portland Leather's visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new.

Those figures come from partner firms with commercial incentives to demonstrate the channel works. Inside AI could not independently verify the underlying data. The results also cover a small set of advertisers, which limits how broadly they can be generalized.

Incrementality measurement remains at an early stage. OpenAI is working with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic on geo-based experiments designed to estimate the causal impact of ChatGPT Ads. That approach compares outcomes across regions to isolate advertising effects from other factors.

Brand Safety Tests Shield Private Conversations

OpenAI is developing brand suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. The arrangement lets independent partners assess how OpenAI's brand safety standards are applied in a controlled testing environment. Crucially, these partners will not access private user conversations.

The company's placement guardrails assess whether a conversation is appropriate for advertising. The system aims to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts. Automated review, human oversight, and ongoing monitoring support these safeguards. For brands with narrow placement requirements, Negative Phrases are now available to qualifying advertisers.

The privacy question matters because ChatGPT conversations often contain personal details. Users discuss health concerns, financial problems, and relationship issues with the chatbot. Any advertising system that scans those conversations for placement decisions raises obvious concerns. OpenAI's decision to keep suitability partners away from raw conversation data addresses one part of that problem, but the internal review process remains opaque.

The visual ad pilot follows a broader pattern in the AI industry. Google has tested ads in its AI Overviews and Gemini assistant. Microsoft has placed ads in Copilot. Perplexity introduced sponsored follow-up questions last year. Every major AI assistant now carries some form of commercial messaging, and the formats are becoming more visual and more integrated.

What separates OpenAI's approach is scale and timing. The company reached 1.2 billion weekly users before turning on advertising at meaningful volume. That sequence gave it leverage with advertisers and time to build measurement partnerships before opening the floodgates.

Businesses can sign up for ads at ads.openai.com. OpenAI says it will continue adding formats and capabilities as the platform evolves. The company frames these updates as part of a mission to help people discover products and make decisions inside ChatGPT. Whether users embrace advertising in a tool they often treat as a private assistant remains an open question. The pilot will provide the first real answer.
