Google Launches Search Generative AI Performance Reports

Google's new Search Console reports reveal how content performs in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with opt-out controls for publishers.

September 16, 2026, (Inside AI) — Google has globally launched dedicated performance reports for its generative AI search features, alongside new controls that allow publishers to block their content from appearing in AI-generated summaries. The move, announced within Google Search Console, gives website owners their first official window into how their pages surface across AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative experiences in Discover.

The rollout follows an initial testing phase that began earlier this year. It arrives as AI-driven search results increasingly reshape how users find information online, often without clicking through to source websites. For publishers, the stakes are high: visibility in AI answers can drive brand awareness, but the lack of click data leaves a critical gap in measuring real traffic impact.

The new reporting section appears as an expandable tab under the main performance dashboard. It isolates impressions and visibility metrics specifically for generative features. Site owners can see which pages appear in AI responses, track geographic distribution across countries, and monitor daily or weekly trends. However, the current iteration omits click data, meaning publishers cannot directly measure how many users actually visit their sites from AI features.

Google's John Mueller addressed the limitations in a LinkedIn post, emphasizing that the tool aims for usefulness rather than absolute precision.

“I expect [Google] will evolve over time, search / AI Mode / AI Overviews evolve too, there are edge-cases; the goal is not a written-in-stone absolute truth for position counting (that's impossible), but rather to make something that's useful for site owners in terms of understanding how their site is shown. We'll update the documentation when / if there are significant changes. It's cool to see these evolutions in search, but it also means there will be some work required on your end when it comes to interpreting, understanding, comparing these metrics,” said John Mueller, Search Advocate at Google.

Alongside the reporting upgrade, Google introduced a companion control toggle. This setting lets publishers explicitly opt out of having their content used as grounding text or reference links inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. Crucially, Google confirmed that using this toggle will not negatively impact core web search rankings outside of generative features. That assurance aims to ease fears that blocking AI features could hurt overall search visibility.

Industry professionals have quickly analyzed the updates. Many note the opportunities for better transparency but also point out inherent reporting limitations. AI response layouts differ drastically from traditional blue links, making metrics like position and true user engagement complex to track. Some SEO experts worry that without click data, publishers cannot fully assess the value of their AI visibility.

This launch marks a significant step in bridging the communication gap between search engines and content creators. As AI continues to reshape digital discovery, these tools offer much-needed visibility. Webmasters and SEO experts can now better gauge their brand presence in AI-driven environments while deciding whether to participate in or opt out of Google's evolving generative ecosystem.

Looking ahead, Google is expected to refine these reports based on user feedback. The company has not announced a timeline for adding click data, but Mueller's comments suggest further evolutions are likely. For now, publishers have a new lens into the AI search era, albeit one that requires careful interpretation.
