August 10, 2026, (Inside AI) — OpenAI has acquired AI presentation startup NextSlide, a deal completed earlier in 2026 but disclosed only on August 8. The entire NextSlide team has been absorbed into ChatGPT’s development division, founder Ahmed Beshry confirmed.
NextSlide built software that turns prompts, notes, documents, or research into polished, editable slide decks. Beshry described the mission as making visual communication more accessible and helping people express their ideas with clarity.
“That mission continues inside OpenAI,” Beshry wrote in a farewell note on NextSlide’s website, acknowledging the announcement was coming “a few months late” because the transaction had already closed.
The acquisition is OpenAI’s 17th in three years, with six closing in the first quarter of 2026 alone. It signals a deepening push into productivity tools, directly challenging incumbents like Microsoft, Canva, and Gamma.

Beshry is not a first-time founder. He previously co-founded Caper AI, a smart cart and cashier-less checkout startup that Instacart acquired for $350 million in 2021. OpenAI is buying proven talent with specific product vision, not simply hiring engineers.
The strategic logic becomes clearer when you examine what OpenAI had already shipped before the deal closed. ChatGPT Work launched on July 9, and a ChatGPT sidebar for PowerPoint is available across Free through Enterprise tiers with plan-based limits. Folding in a team that had already built prompt-to-deck tooling gives OpenAI a purpose-built foundation instead of starting from scratch.
Why This Deal Reshapes AI Productivity
The competitive implications are significant. Gamma, the leading AI presentation tool, hit a $2.1 billion valuation and $100 million in annual recurring revenue in 2025. Microsoft’s Copilot already generates slides inside PowerPoint, and Canva offers its own AI presentation builder. OpenAI entering this space with native ChatGPT integration puts all three competitors on notice.
ChatGPT’s 500 million weekly active users represent a distribution advantage none of them can match. By embedding presentation creation directly into ChatGPT, OpenAI can capture users who currently toggle between a chatbot and a separate design tool.
This follows a pattern. OpenAI bought Hiro Finance in April 2026, shut its app within a week, and deleted user data by May 13. Acquired products often do not survive the transition. What survives is the team and their domain expertise, which gets redirected toward making ChatGPT the central workspace rather than a chat window you consult before switching to another application.
What’s Missing from the Narrative
OpenAI has not disclosed the acquisition price, and NextSlide’s user base was modest compared to Gamma or Canva. The deal appears to be a classic acqui-hire, where the technology may be integrated but the standalone product will likely disappear. This raises questions about whether OpenAI can truly compete on design polish, an area where Canva and Gamma have spent years refining user experience.

Industry analysts note that presentation software is sticky. Enterprises deeply embedded in Microsoft Office or Google Workspace may resist switching to a ChatGPT-native tool, even with seamless integration. Meanwhile, the acquisition spree continues. OpenAI’s pace of six deals in one quarter suggests an aggressive land grab for talent and technology, particularly in areas that turn ChatGPT from a conversational agent into a full-fledged productivity platform.
