Despite the scrutiny, Meta is reportedly testing a version that records constantly to train a personalized AI, and its chief technology officer confirmed the company is exploring facial recognition integration. The reputational fallout is tangible: the glasses are being nicknamed "pervert glasses," and some owners are embarrassed to wear them publicly. New York has already banned camera-equipped glasses from all courthouses, echoing the restrictions that plagued Google Glass.

Snapchat's upcoming AR Specs have faced ridicule for their bulky design and a steep $2,000 price tag, lacking the "cool factor" essential for consumer wearables. Both companies are repeating the mistakes of Google Glass, which was undone in 2015 by a $1,500 cost and stigma over privacy and ergonomics, leading to bans in bars, cinemas, and casinos.

Meta views glasses as the device that could eventually replace smartphones as our primary digital interface, but Alexandr Wang, head of its Superintelligence unit, admitted this year that AI tools are "not overwhelmingly better" for most users yet. If negative sentiment persists, these glasses risk becoming another cautionary tale rather than a revolution.

Privacy Outcry Echoes Google Glass Era

The parallels to Google Glass are striking. Google's device faced bans over recording fears, and Meta is now encountering similar legal pushback. The New York courthouse ban is likely the first of many restrictions, as lawmakers grapple with the implications of always-on cameras in everyday eyewear. A 2024 study published in the Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction highlighted that bystander privacy concerns remain the top barrier to smart glasses adoption, a finding that Meta and Snapchat seem to be ignoring.

Meta's exploration of facial recognition adds another layer of risk. While the technology could enable personalized experiences, it also transforms the glasses into powerful surveillance tools. Critics argue that without robust safeguards, the devices could enable mass identification and tracking, reminiscent of dystopian scenarios.

Design and Cost Undermine Consumer Appeal

Beyond privacy, the glasses are failing on basic consumer metrics. Snapchat's AR Specs have been mocked for their enormous size, a critical flaw for a fashion-adjacent product. At $2,000, they are even pricier than Google Glass's infamous $1,500 tag, which was a key factor in its commercial failure. Meta's Ray-Ban partnership offers a sleeker design, but the stigma is now so severe that some users avoid wearing them in public, undermining the very purpose of a wearable device.

Industry analysts note that successful wearables must blend seamlessly into daily life, a lesson learned from the Apple Watch's focus on health and subtlety. By contrast, AI glasses are currently perceived as conspicuous and intrusive, a combination that has historically doomed consumer tech products. Meta's internal testing of always-on recording suggests a fundamental misunderstanding of user comfort and social norms.

As regulators and the public push back, the future of AI glasses hangs in the balance. Meta and Snapchat may need to radically rethink their strategies—prioritizing transparency, privacy-by-design, and aesthetic appeal—to avoid joining Google Glass in the graveyard of overhyped hardware.
