Samsung has dabbled in robots for years—from its Ballie home companion concept to industrial exoskeletons—but the RX division marks its most formalized bet yet. Unlike competitors such as LG Electronics or Hyundai (which acquired Boston Dynamics), Samsung has historically approached robotics with caution. Now, it’s signaling a shift from experimentation to execution.
The decision comes as global robotics investment surges. The International Federation of Robotics reported that worldwide installations of industrial robots hit 517,000 units in 2024, with service robot sales growing 37% year-over-year. Samsung’s move positions it to capture value across both industrial and consumer segments—areas where its expertise in semiconductors, AI, and manufacturing could converge.
Why Now? The Convergence of AI, Chips, and Labor Shifts
Samsung’s timing isn’t accidental. Three forces are reshaping the robotics landscape. First, advances in generative AI and vision models have made robots more adaptable. Second, Samsung’s own chip division—the world’s largest memory maker—can supply the high-bandwidth memory crucial for robotic processing. Third, labor shortages in manufacturing and logistics, especially in South Korea’s aging workforce, create immediate demand.

What the RX Division Means for Samsung’s Portfolio
The RX division will likely focus on three areas: industrial automation (factory robots for Samsung’s own manufacturing lines and external clients), service robotics (retail, logistics, and healthcare), and consumer robotics (home assistants and companions). Samsung’s existing investments in Rainbow Robotics—a South Korean firm in which it holds a 14.99% stake—may serve as a foundation for collaborative robots, or cobots.
Analysts note that Samsung’s robotics push could also bolster its SmartThings ecosystem. Imagine a robot vacuum that not only cleans but also monitors home security, syncs with appliances, and learns household routines. That vision, however, requires solving hard problems in navigation, manipulation, and safety—areas where Samsung has filed hundreds of patents but delivered few commercial products.
The company’s R&D spending hit $23 billion in 2025, with a growing portion allocated to AI and robotics. By centralizing robotics under the CEO, Samsung aims to cut through internal bureaucracy that has historically slowed new ventures. “This isn’t just about building a better robot arm,” said Park Ji-hoon, a Seoul-based tech analyst. “It’s about creating a platform that spans hardware, software, and services—much like they did with smartphones.”
