September 15, 2026, (Inside AI) — The Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI (WSAI) at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) will launch a venture-backed AI Studio later this week, aiming to convert artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science research into commercial companies. The inaugural call for applications opens on October 3, 2026, and the program is open to IIT Madras and WSAI researchers, academic founders from other institutions, and external entrepreneurs with an AI, ML, or data science idea or an existing venture.
The studio will run two cohorts annually, with applications opening in winter and spring cycles. Selected teams will undergo a six-month development and evaluation program, extendable by up to three months for ventures progressing toward an institutional funding round. The initiative represents a structured attempt to bridge the gap between academic research and venture creation, a space where India has historically underperformed relative to its research output.
A Pipeline Problem India Has Struggled to Solve
India produces a significant volume of AI and ML research, but converting that work into funded startups has remained a persistent challenge. IIT Madras said its broader incubation network has supported hundreds of deep-tech startups with a combined valuation of $8 billion and more than 11,000 direct jobs. The AI Studio is designed to add a dedicated funnel for AI, ML, and data science ventures specifically.
The program will begin with an initial training and bootcamp open to a larger group of applicants. A smaller number will then be selected for the full AI Studio program. During the six-month phase, founders will receive seed funding, cloud and computing credits, access to research laboratories, data and research resources, mentoring, and entrepreneurship training. They will also work with an Entrepreneur-in-Residence and faculty and domain experts.
The support is structured to help teams validate demand, develop their technology, and prepare for funding and eventual incorporation into the IIT Madras Incubation Cell ecosystem. Successful ventures can move toward a formal spin-out. The studio will also provide access to WSAI's research laboratories and resources, allowing founders to work closely with researchers and use the institute's existing capabilities.
This model mirrors approaches seen at other global institutions. Stanford's StartX and MIT's The Engine have similarly sought to commercialize deep-tech research, though with varying degrees of focus on AI-specific ventures. IIT Madras's move signals a recognition that generic incubation may not be sufficient for AI startups, which often require specialized compute resources and domain expertise that general incubators lack.
The timing is notable. India's AI startup ecosystem has attracted record venture funding in recent years, yet the share of startups emerging directly from academic research remains small. Most Indian AI startups are founded by industry veterans rather than researchers. The AI Studio explicitly targets that gap by opening to academic founders from other institutions and external entrepreneurs, not just IIT Madras affiliates.
However, the program's success will depend on execution. Six months is a short window to validate a deep-tech product and prepare for funding. The extension of up to three months for ventures nearing an institutional funding round suggests IIT Madras anticipates that some teams will need more time. The venture-backed structure also implies external investors will have a say in which teams advance, potentially prioritizing near-term commercial viability over longer-horizon research.

The AI Studio is part of IIT Madras' wider deep-tech incubation ecosystem, which the institute says has created thousands of jobs. For a country aiming to become a global AI powerhouse, converting research into companies at scale remains a critical test. This studio is one experiment toward that goal. Its first cohort will reveal whether the model can produce ventures that survive beyond the protected environment of a university program.
