September 18, 2026, (Inside AI) — Harvard University's push to integrate artificial intelligence into teaching and campus operations has collided with a faculty backlash that is now spilling into national discourse. The conflict, which had been building since the Faculty of Arts and Sciences issued its first classroom AI guidelines in 2023, erupted this fall as university leadership urged embrace of the technology while a growing number of professors warned of its costs to learning.
At the center of the dispute are President Alan M. Garber and David Deming, the Danoff dean of the College. Both have publicly encouraged students and faculty to adopt AI, arguing that failure to adapt risks being left behind. In his Memorial Church address on the first day of classes, Garber said he was "convinced" that with AI's help, advances in knowledge will occur more rapidly than ever before in human existence.
That same day, Deming sent an email to students endorsing "actively encouraging AI usage where it can deepen learning." He also floated ways instructors could AI-proof assignments, including moving away from take-home exams and accepting or even encouraging AI in writing courses.
"We would all benefit from getting out of the AI-detection business because it damages trust between faculty and students," Deming wrote.

The institutional push is concrete. Over the summer, the Bok Center for Teaching and Learning issued new guidance for faculty on designing AI-adaptive classes, encouraging instructors to include AI policies on syllabi. The Office of Undergraduate Education requires faculty to post those policies on Canvas sites. Harvard has also embedded AI directly into the curriculum: the College added a required AI module to first-year Expository Writing, announced access to Anthropic's Claude for affiliates, and introduced an AI chatbot to advise incoming students on course schedules.
Faculty Pushback Grows Louder
Faculty sentiment, however, has shifted sharply against the technology. Two-thirds of the 463 faculty who responded to the Crimson's annual FAS survey said AI has had a negative effect on their classes, up from 42 percent in 2025. Nearly 90 percent reported receiving coursework they knew or suspected was AI-generated. A separate spring survey found over one-third of students admitted using AI in ways that violated course policies.
The concerns have broken out of Harvard's campus. In August, MIT released a report warning that AI is causing "cognitive surrender" among students and disrupting campus culture.
"As a community, what should worry us most is that many uses of AI deprive students of the opportunity to learn," the report reads.
Last week, the Chronicle of Higher Education published an op-ed by University of California, Irvine philosophy professor Anastasia Berg titled "The Ivy League's Surrender to AI Is Insane." Berg took issue with Deming and Dartmouth president Sian Leah Beilock for characterizing AI's impact on learning as inevitable and irreversible.
"The idea that preparing students to succeed in an AI-saturated world requires reimagining college as an AI incubator is not a sign of technological acumen, but of tech illiteracy," Berg wrote. "An LLM is not an aircraft requiring years of training to operate."

On Wednesday, Jill Lepore, Woods professor of American history and professor of law, published her own op-ed in the Crimson, portraying Harvard's leadership as "oblivious" to MIT's findings. Lepore cited research showing that reliance on generative AI leads to less critical thinking and lower test scores, and warned against losing opportunities for collaboration and teaching if AI takes over tasks like research.
"The machine conversation is not free," Lepore wrote. "It comes at the cost of our common life together as teachers, learners, and researchers, colleagues, mentors, and friends. Not to mention, supervising student researchers is our job."
Deming, in his letter, acknowledged that Harvard's approach is still evolving. AI adoption "will require extensive consultation and input from faculty, staff, and students, both because faculty have the expertise to judge what is best for their class and because this is a fast-moving landscape and no one has all the answers," he wrote.
The debate mirrors a broader reckoning across higher education. As institutions race to adopt AI tools, they face mounting evidence that unchecked use may undermine the very skills universities exist to cultivate. Harvard's experiment now serves as a high-profile test case for whether top-down AI adoption can coexist with faculty autonomy and student learning.
