October 8, 2026, (Inside AI) — OpenAI has quietly begun rolling out a one-month free trial of ChatGPT Plus to select users in Pakistan and India. The promotion, which surfaced on some accounts this week, lets eligible users test the premium tier at no cost before committing to the standard $20 monthly fee, roughly Rs 5,500 to Rs 5,800 in local currency.

The offer appears as a "Claim free offer" button on the ChatGPT subscription page. Users must still enter valid payment details to activate it. If they do not cancel before the trial ends, OpenAI automatically charges the full subscription price for the next billing cycle.

The trial targets accounts that have never purchased a paid ChatGPT plan. But access is not universal. Some eligible users report seeing the offer while others do not, suggesting a phased or selective rollout rather than a broad public launch. One Indian account with no prior paid subscription history displayed the trial, while another that had previously used ChatGPT Go did not, according to reporting from NewsBytes.

That inconsistency points to a deliberate strategy. OpenAI appears to be testing conversion tactics in a region where free-tier usage is high but paid adoption remains nascent. Pakistan, with its rapidly expanding base of AI users, represents a logical target for such experiments.

Why South Asia Is OpenAI's Testing Ground

The Plus trial follows OpenAI's earlier move to make ChatGPT Go free for all users in India for 12 months, starting in November 2025. That plan provides access to GPT-5, roughly 10 times more messages than the free tier, and image generation. The Plus trial now sits above Go as a more premium offering, giving users priority access to OpenAI's most advanced models, faster response times, higher usage limits, and expanded memory for longer conversations.

Free users often face slowdowns during peak hours. Plus subscribers do not. That difference matters for professionals who rely on the tool for work, coding, or research. A free month removes the initial cost barrier and lets users experience the performance gap firsthand.

OpenAI has not publicly announced the trial or specified which countries are included. The company did not respond to requests for comment. Inside AI could not independently verify the full scope of the rollout.

For OpenAI, the calculus is straightforward. South Asia offers a large pool of engaged free users who could convert to paid plans if given a taste of premium features. The challenge lies in converting trial users before they cancel. Auto-renewal at full price creates a friction point. Users who forget to cancel will see a $20 charge, a significant sum in markets where purchasing power is lower.

That risk cuts both ways. Some users may feel trapped by the auto-renewal terms. Others may simply set a reminder and cancel, treating the trial as a free month with no intention of paying. OpenAI likely accepts some churn in exchange for the chance to convert a meaningful percentage of trial users into long-term subscribers.

The selective nature of the rollout also raises questions. If OpenAI wanted maximum conversion, it might offer the trial to all eligible users at once. Instead, the company appears to be testing different segments, perhaps measuring which user profiles respond best to the offer. Accounts with no paid history are the primary target, but even within that group, access varies.

This is not OpenAI's first foray into region-specific promotions. The free ChatGPT Go plan in India served as a year-long experiment in market cultivation. It gave millions of users access to a mid-tier product and likely generated valuable data on usage patterns, retention, and willingness to pay. The Plus trial extends that logic to a higher tier.

For users in Pakistan who see the offer, the steps are simple. Visit the ChatGPT subscription page, locate the "Claim free offer" button under the Plus plan, and confirm the $0 price for the first month. Payment details are still required. After the trial ends, the standard $20 monthly fee applies unless the subscription is canceled.

OpenAI's broader strategy in South Asia reflects a growing recognition that emerging markets are not just sources of free users. They are potential paying customers, provided the price and product fit the local context. The Plus trial is a low-cost way to test that proposition.

Whether it becomes a permanent fixture or remains a limited experiment depends on the data OpenAI collects. For now, the offer remains inconsistent across accounts. Users who want to try Plus should claim it soon and set a reminder to cancel before the billing cycle resets.
