July 14, 2026, (Inside AI) — Australia is creating a central government office to coordinate artificial intelligence regulation across all sectors, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will announce on Wednesday in Sydney. The Office of AI will sit inside the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, designed to replace the current fragmented approach with a unified, whole-of-government strategy.

The move marks a significant escalation in how nations are structuring their AI governance, moving beyond piecemeal, sector-specific rules. Albanese is expected to frame the office as a world-first model that mirrors historical regulatory coordination for transformative technologies like civil aviation and genetics.

"Up until now, our response has been issue-by-issue, sector by sector," Albanese is expected to say.

"But just as government developed co-ordinated approaches for other significant technologies: from civil aviation in the 1920s to genetics in the 1990s, we must do this with AI as well."

The new office aims to streamline compliance and provide clarity for businesses, potentially boosting Australia's appeal as a destination for AI investment and data centre development. However, the announcement comes amid mounting public concern over job displacement, energy consumption, and intellectual property risks tied to AI.

Australia currently lacks dedicated AI laws, relying instead on a patchwork of privacy, consumer protection, and a voluntary ethics framework. This has drawn criticism from experts who argue voluntary guidelines are insufficient to address harms like algorithmic bias or deepfake proliferation.

The Office of AI will be tasked with developing mandatory standards and coordinating regulatory efforts across ministries, a model that resembles the UK's AI Safety Institute but with broader policy coordination powers. Unlike the EU's prescriptive AI Act, Australia's approach appears to emphasize flexibility and investment attraction alongside safety.

Industry observers note the challenge of balancing innovation with safeguards. The data centre boom, partly driven by AI, has raised environmental alarms due to water and energy demands. At the same time, Australia's tech sector has pushed for regulatory certainty to compete with global hubs like Singapore and Canada.

Albanese's speech is expected to highlight that clear rules will reduce compliance costs and attract global AI firms seeking stable regulatory environments. Yet, without legislative teeth, the office's effectiveness may hinge on future parliamentary action. Some critics warn that a centralized office could become a bottleneck if not adequately resourced.

The announcement positions Australia alongside other nations racing to shape AI governance. The United States has relied on executive orders and agency-specific actions, while China has imposed strict controls on algorithms and data. Australia's model could offer a middle path, but its success will depend on execution and enforcement.

Details on the office's budget, staffing, and specific regulatory powers remain unclear. The government is expected to release further information following the Prime Minister's address.
