July 31, 2026, (Inside AI) — Nexus Data Centers is in advanced talks to secure $15 billion in bank financing for a Texas data center campus tied to Anthropic, with Alphabet’s Google providing financial guarantees and supplying chips, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The deal underscores the extraordinary capital flows into AI infrastructure as Big Tech races to meet surging demand for computing power. Google’s involvement as both guarantor and chip supplier signals a deepening entanglement between cloud providers and AI startups, blurring the lines between customer, investor, and infrastructure partner.
The Texas campus, developed by Nexus Data Centers, would be one of the largest single-site AI infrastructure projects to date. While specific details about the facility’s capacity or location within Texas remain undisclosed, the $15 billion figure dwarfs most previous data center financings and reflects the massive scale required to train and run frontier AI models like Anthropic’s Claude.
Google’s role is particularly notable. The company is an existing investor in Anthropic, having committed up to $2 billion in previous rounds. Now, by backing Nexus’s debt with guarantees and supplying its custom TPU chips, Google is effectively underwriting Anthropic’s physical expansion while locking in a key customer for its cloud and silicon businesses.

This financing structure, where a tech giant guarantees loans for a third-party developer building dedicated capacity for a specific AI lab, is a novel twist on the traditional data center lease model. It allows Anthropic to secure massive compute without tying up its own capital, while banks get comfort from Google’s creditworthiness.
The deal comes amid an unprecedented boom in AI data center construction. Global spending on AI infrastructure is expected to exceed $200 billion annually by 2027, according to a McKinsey report, driven by the computational demands of large language models. Texas has become a hotspot for such projects, attracted by abundant land, relatively cheap power, and favorable tax incentives.
Yet the concentration of so much capacity in a single campus raises questions about energy consumption and grid impact. A facility of this scale could require hundreds of megawatts of power, equivalent to a small city. Texas’s ERCOT grid, already strained by extreme weather and industrial growth, may face new challenges.
For Anthropic, the Texas campus represents a leap toward independence from public cloud providers, even as it deepens ties with Google. The company has positioned itself as a safety-focused rival to OpenAI, and securing dedicated infrastructure could accelerate its model development while giving it more control over security and compliance.
