September 1, 2026, (Inside AI) — Asia’s manufacturing hubs expanded in August as global demand for artificial intelligence hardware accelerated. Private surveys released Tuesday showed factory activity rising in China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The AI-driven export surge offset cost pressures from the prolonged Middle East conflict.
China’s RatingDog General Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index climbed to 51.5 in August from 50.9 in July. The reading beat analyst expectations of 51 and stayed above the 50 threshold separating growth from contraction. Japan’s PMI rose to 54.9, its highest since April, while South Korea posted a ninth consecutive month of expansion.
The sustained expansion signals that AI infrastructure spending is reshaping Asia’s industrial base. Semiconductors, computers, and related components are driving new orders across the region. Yet the official China survey still showed overall factory activity in contraction, revealing a two-speed recovery.
AI Supercycle Powers Export Engines
Japan’s new business grew at the fastest pace since January 2018. Annabel Fiddes, economics associate director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said:

South Korea’s PMI eased to 52.3 from 53.1 in July but remained above 50. Exports jumped 68.7% year over year in August, extending a 15-month streak of growth. David Owen, an economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said:

Taiwan’s PMI stood at 54.7, down slightly from 55.1 in July. Malaysia eased to 50.2 from 50.7. The Philippines jumped to 54.9 from 51.8. Indonesia dipped into contraction at 49.8 from 50.2.
Uneven Recovery Tests Regional Resilience
The divergence between official and private China surveys underscores fragility. AI-led demand is stabilizing parts of China’s industrial sector, but broader factory activity remains weak. Rising energy and shipping costs from the Middle East war add pressure on margins.

Asia’s export-reliant economies now depend heavily on a single demand driver: AI infrastructure. This concentration creates both opportunity and vulnerability. Any slowdown in global AI capital expenditure could ripple across supply chains. For now, the supercycle shows no signs of cooling.
