September 8, 2026, (Inside AI) — French AI developer Mistral has closed a €3 billion equity round at a valuation of about €21 billion ($24 billion). The company called it the largest private technology funding round in European history.
The round was jointly led by existing investor PSG Equity, alongside first-time backers Samsung Electronics and the EU-supported Scaleup Europe Fund. The deal makes Mistral Europe's second-highest-valued private tech group.
Chief Financial Officer Johan Bergqvist said the capital will fund model development and frontier research. The company competes with much larger U.S. rivals, including Anthropic at $965 billion and OpenAI at $852 billion.
Both American firms are planning public listings this year. Bergqvist said an IPO for Mistral remains "always of course an optionality for us going forward" but that timing was "still up in the air".
"We don't have any ongoing discussions around that at the moment," he added.
Europe's Digital Sovereignty Bets On Open Models
The funding arrives amid a push for European technological independence. In June, Washington restricted foreign access to two advanced models from Anthropic. That move gave urgency to calls for a homegrown AI provider.
"The fact that the EU or Europe have to have their own kind of AI provider in the game is important," Bergqvist said.
"We have seen in the past that there is politics involved in the access of these solutions, and it's important that you make sure that you maintain access and do not compromise your kind of supply chain," he said, without naming Anthropic directly.
Mistral develops open models that more than 125 customers can download and customize on their own servers. The company is on track for $1 billion in annual recurring revenue by year-end.
Its client base is becoming more geographically diverse, with growth particularly strong in Asia and North America. Microsoft, which agreed in July to spend billions on Mistral's computing infrastructure in Europe, did not participate in the funding round.
Valuation Gap Defines The Race
Mistral's $24 billion valuation is dwarfed by U.S. competitors. Anthropic's $965 billion figure is nearly 40 times larger. OpenAI sits at $852 billion. Both are preparing initial public offerings this year.
The gap reflects a broader pattern. European AI startups have historically raised less capital than American peers. Data from Dealroom shows European AI companies attracted about $15 billion in 2025, compared with more than $100 billion for U.S. firms.
Mistral's open-weight strategy differs from the closed systems of OpenAI and Anthropic. The approach appeals to enterprises that want data control and sovereignty. It also aligns with European regulators' preference for transparency.
The company's revenue trajectory supports its valuation. Reaching $1 billion in annual recurring revenue within three years of founding would be faster than most SaaS companies. Salesforce took nearly a decade to hit that milestone.
Still, questions remain about margins. Open models can be downloaded and run by customers, reducing lock-in. This may pressure pricing compared with API-based rivals. Bergqvist did not disclose profitability figures.
Mistral's expansion into Asia and North America signals ambition beyond European contracts. The Samsung investment could open doors in South Korea's enterprise market. Scaleup Europe Fund's backing adds political weight to the sovereignty narrative.
The company's next challenge is converting political goodwill into commercial dominance. European governments may prefer a local provider, but procurement decisions still hinge on performance and cost.
