August 10, 2026, (Inside AI) — Unitree, the Hangzhou-based robotics company, has priced its Shanghai initial public offering at 150.8 yuan per share, aiming to raise 6.1 billion yuan ($904 million). Subscriptions begin Monday, setting the stage for the first mainland-listed humanoid robot manufacturer.

The listing marks a pivotal moment for China's burgeoning embodied intelligence sector. Unitree's move comes amid a rush of Chinese robot makers seeking public capital, including Leju Robotics and AgiBot, as they bet on a future where humanoid machines work alongside people.

Founded in 2016 by engineer Wang Xingxing, Unitree initially gained fame for affordable quadruped robots. Its G1, H1, and R1 humanoids have since gone viral, showcasing running, dancing, and martial arts. The company competes with Tesla, Boston Dynamics, and a growing cluster of Chinese startups.

Unitree's financials stand out. Revenue surged more than fourfold to nearly 1.7 billion yuan in 2025, with adjusted net profit around 600 million yuan. Unlike many peers, it is profitable. Overseas revenue exceeded 40% of sales in each reporting period, underscoring global demand.

The company has become a symbol of Beijing's push to lead in embodied intelligence, an emerging field that fuses AI models with machines that navigate the physical world. Unitree leverages China's deep supply chains for motors, sensors, and batteries to produce sophisticated robots at prices far below many foreign rivals.

Yet commercial success does not prove humanoids can replace workers. Current demand comes mainly from universities and government-backed projects using robots for education, research, and demonstrations. Humanoids still struggle with reliability, dexterity, and performing varied tasks for extended periods without human intervention.

Developing humanoids requires heavy spending on engineers, training data, AI models, and manufacturing capacity, years before factory or household demand is certain. Public markets offer capital to keep developing technology while government support and investor interest remain strong.

Leju Robotics, maker of the Kuavo humanoid, filed for a Shenzhen ChiNext listing in May. Shanghai-based AgiBot, another leading producer, began preparations for a Hong Kong IPO in July. The race to list reflects both ambition and the immense costs of building machines that can someday work in factories and homes.

Unitree's IPO pricing values the company richly, betting on a future where humanoids become ubiquitous. But the path from viral videos to industrial reliability remains long. The company's prospectus acknowledges that humanoids are not yet ready for mass deployment, and revenue concentration among a few large customers poses risks.

China's humanoid sector is crowded, with over 50 startups chasing the same dream. Unitree's early lead in quadrupeds and its profitable status give it an edge, but the technology gap with the U.S. persists in areas like AI integration and dexterity. The IPO proceeds will fund R&D and production scale-up, crucial for staying ahead.

As subscriptions open, investors will weigh Unitree's viral appeal against the hard realities of robotics commercialization. The offering tests whether public markets are ready to bet on a future where humanoid robots are more than just a spectacle.
