Anima Anandkumar Named to TIME's 100 Most Influential People in AI

Caltech scientist Anima Anandkumar joins TIME's 100 most influential people in AI for her work bridging AI and physical science.

August 31, 2026, (Inside AI) — Anima Anandkumar, a professor at the California Institute of Technology, has been named to TIME magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in AI. The recognition highlights her decade-long effort to bridge artificial intelligence and the physical sciences.

Anandkumar's work focuses on Neural Operators, a method that lets AI models simulate physical processes across scales. These models can run more than a million times faster than traditional techniques, with applications in weather forecasting, nuclear fusion, quantum computing, and medical device design.

Her research has produced practical results, including a catheter that reduces bacterial contamination by 100 times and improved layouts for quantum dots. She has also contributed to chip mask design and advanced manufacturing processes.

Born in Mysore, India, Anandkumar grew up in an academic family. Her parents were engineers, her grandfather a mathematician, and her great-grandfather a Sanskrit scholar. She also trained in Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form.

She earned a BTech in electrical engineering from IIT Madras in 2004 and a PhD from Cornell University in 2009. After a postdoctoral role at MIT, she joined Amazon Web Services as a Principal Scientist, where she helped build Amazon SageMaker.

In 2017, she became a professor at Caltech. A year later, she took on the role of Senior Director of AI Research at NVIDIA. Her dual academic and industry positions have allowed her to move research into production quickly.

From Neural Operators to a New Company

The TIME recognition came just after Anandkumar announced the public launch of her company, Accelerated Understanding. In a post on X, she wrote:

She said the company builds on Neural Operators invented at Caltech, which also led to the weather model FourCastNet developed with her NVIDIA team. She has since applied the same approach to nuclear fusion, quantum chemistry, and medical devices.

Anandkumar said she is particularly excited about self-improvement in physics-based models. These systems can check and refine their own results instead of relying only on lab data.

A Voice for Science at the United Nations

In March 2026, Anandkumar was appointed to the United Nations Secretary-General's Scientific Advisory Board. In that role, she advises UN leadership on artificial intelligence and helps shape the scientific agenda.

She told TIME that her focus is on keeping AI conversations grounded in science, especially for countries in the Global South. She acknowledged concerns that data centers could be used mainly for surveillance, but said democratic systems can steer them toward weather forecasting, climate research, and scientific discovery.

Anandkumar has received the IEEE Fellowship, the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, and the NSF CAREER Award. Her career shows how academic research can move into industry and global policy without losing scientific rigor.
