October 6, 2026, (Inside AI) — ElevenLabs, the London-based AI voice synthesis company, plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in India, co-founder Mati Staniszewski said on Tuesday. The company is also open to merger and acquisition targets in the country, though it declined to name any candidates.

The move marks one of the largest commitments by a European AI startup to India's fast-growing technology ecosystem. It signals that voice AI, long dominated by English-language models, is now racing to capture the country's vast multilingual market.

Staniszewski said the capital would fund local hiring, model development, and work on Indian languages. ElevenLabs declined to specify the exact amount, but the scale places it among the largest AI investments in India this year.

India's digital economy has become a magnet for global AI firms seeking scale. With over 1.4 billion people and 22 official languages, the country offers a testing ground for speech technologies that must handle code-switching, dialects, and low-resource languages. ElevenLabs already faces competition from local startups and global giants like Google and Microsoft, which have invested heavily in Indian language AI.

The investment comes as India's government pushes its IndiaAI Mission, a program aimed at building domestic AI compute and datasets. That policy backdrop may give ElevenLabs access to subsidized infrastructure and partnerships with research institutions. The company has not confirmed whether it will tap those incentives.

Voice AI is a crowded field. ElevenLabs rose to prominence with realistic text-to-speech and voice cloning tools. Its expansion into India suggests a bet that localized voice interfaces will power everything from customer service to education and media. The company's own website highlights its work on speech synthesis and voice cloning.

Industry analysts note that India's linguistic diversity makes it a difficult but lucrative market. Success requires more than translation. It demands cultural nuance and robust performance in noisy environments. ElevenLabs will need to build datasets that represent millions of speakers across regions.

The company's co-founder framed the investment as a long-term commitment. "The investment would be used to add local teams, develop models and work on Indian languages," Mati Staniszewski, co-founder of ElevenLabs, said. He added that the company is open to acquisitions but declined to disclose any names.

ElevenLabs is not the first AI firm to bet big on India. Microsoft has committed billions to cloud and AI infrastructure there. Google has expanded its India language models. Yet ElevenLabs' focus on voice gives it a distinct angle. Voice is often the most accessible interface in a country where literacy levels vary and mobile penetration is high.

The investment could also intensify competition for local AI talent. Indian engineers are in high demand, and global firms often struggle to retain them. ElevenLabs will need to offer compelling research opportunities and competitive pay.

Regulatory considerations remain. India is drafting rules for AI safety and data privacy. Voice cloning raises particular concerns about consent and misuse. ElevenLabs has faced scrutiny in the past over potential deepfake abuse. Its India expansion will likely draw attention from policymakers weighing innovation against safeguards.

For now, the company is keeping specifics close. The exact investment figure, timeline, and acquisition targets are undisclosed. But the direction is clear. ElevenLabs sees India not just as a market but as a development hub for multilingual voice AI.

If successful, the move could accelerate the availability of high-quality voice tools in Indian languages. That would benefit sectors like education, healthcare, and rural outreach. It would also raise the bar for local competitors.

The coming months will reveal whether ElevenLabs can translate its global reputation into local traction. Its willingness to invest hundreds of millions suggests it is playing a long game.
