August 27, 2026, (Inside AI) — OpenAI has released a new report detailing how students and educators are using ChatGPT to extend learning beyond the classroom. The analysis reveals that people across all age groups have up to 70 million conversations with ChatGPT each week focused on testing knowledge, including misconception checks and requests for more practice.

In the United States, prompts related to classwork and homework peak at more than 460 million messages per week during the school year. Sunday evenings see the highest usage. Even during summer months, the volume remains above 180 million messages per week.

The report, released as students head back to school, highlights how AI is making guidance, feedback, and practice available whenever students need them. Traditionally, students had to wait until class to ask questions. Teachers juggle dozens of students and administrative work. Parents and tutors are not always available when questions arise.

Continuous Learning Reshapes the School Day

For students, continuous learning can mean getting help with algebra outside the classroom while the lesson is still fresh. For teachers, it can mean adapting an assignment for different skill levels before the first bell. It also means spending less time on recurring paperwork and more time teaching.

For families who speak a different language at home, AI can translate school communications. This helps parents better support a child’s progress. The report spotlights individual teachers and students across the U.S. who use AI in productive, creative, and meaningful ways.

OpenAI conducted a privacy-preserving analysis. The company did not reveal the exact methodology for estimating weekly conversation volumes. However, the figures suggest a significant shift in how students seek academic support outside formal school hours.

Educators See Potential and Limits

AI cannot replace a teacher’s judgment, a parent’s encouragement, or the work students must do to learn. But with appropriate guidance and safeguards, it can give educators more time to focus on teaching. It can also make individualized support available to more people at more times.

The report does not address concerns about academic integrity or the risk of over-reliance on AI. Critics argue that easy access to answers may reduce deep learning. Others note that AI tutors can help students who lack access to private tutoring.

OpenAI has previously faced scrutiny over student data privacy. The company says this analysis is privacy-preserving. Yet it did not specify whether conversations were aggregated or anonymized at the user level.
