October 30, 2026, (Inside AI) — Nvidia is negotiating to provide billions of dollars in credit guarantees to AI cloud provider Nscale, enabling debt financing for a data center dedicated to Anthropic, according to sources familiar with the discussions. The talks, first reported by The Information, underscore Nvidia's intensifying efforts to bankroll the infrastructure that powers its own chip sales. The deal, if finalized, would mark one of the largest credit support arrangements Nvidia has offered to a cloud partner.

The move comes as demand for AI compute surges, straining data center capacity and prompting chipmakers to explore financial engineering to accelerate buildouts. Nvidia's credit guarantees would lower borrowing costs for Nscale, a UK-based AI cloud startup, allowing it to secure debt for a facility tailored to Anthropic's needs. The exact amount and terms remain undisclosed.

Nvidia has increasingly acted as a financier for AI infrastructure. In recent months, it has invested in cloud providers like CoreWeave and backed data center projects to ensure its GPUs reach end customers. These strategies aim to lock in long-term demand and expand the AI ecosystem, but they also raise questions about market concentration and financial risk.

Nvidia's Credit Guarantees Could Reshape AI Infrastructure Financing

Credit guarantees are a form of insurance: Nvidia would promise to cover Nscale's debt obligations if the cloud provider defaults, making lenders more willing to offer favorable terms. This approach allows Nscale to fund construction without diluting equity or tapping its own cash reserves. For Nvidia, it ensures that Anthropic, a leading AI model developer, gets the compute it needs, which in turn drives GPU sales.

Anthropic, known for its Claude models, has been expanding its infrastructure partnerships. The company has deals with Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services, but dedicated capacity via Nscale could provide more control and customization. The data center's location and capacity were not disclosed.

Nscale, formerly known as Kestrel AI, specializes in high-performance AI cloud services. It has attracted attention for its focus on sustainable energy and modular data center designs. The company's partnership with Anthropic would be a significant endorsement of its capabilities.

Industry analysts note that Nvidia's credit support could accelerate AI infrastructure development but also create dependencies. "This is a way for Nvidia to ensure its chips are utilized while helping partners overcome financing hurdles," said one analyst who spoke on condition of anonymity. "But it also ties the financial health of cloud providers to Nvidia's fortunes, which could amplify risks in a downturn."

Nvidia's financial strength, driven by its dominance in AI chips, allows it to extend such guarantees. The company reported record revenues in its latest quarter, with data center sales leading the charge. Its market capitalization has surpassed $1 trillion, giving it ample resources to support partners.

However, the strategy is not without critics. Some investors worry that Nvidia is overextending itself by financing its own ecosystem, reminiscent of vendor financing practices that contributed to the dot-com bubble. Nvidia has defended its approach, stating that it invests in partners to grow the overall AI market.

The talks with Nscale are still in progress and could fall through, the sources said. Neither Nvidia nor Nscale responded to requests for comment. Anthropic declined to comment.

If completed, the deal would be the latest in a series of moves by Nvidia to support AI infrastructure. In September, Nvidia announced a $100 million investment in a data center startup, and it has provided credit support to other cloud providers. These efforts align with Nvidia's goal of expanding AI compute capacity by 10x over the next few years.

This development also highlights the growing role of debt financing in AI infrastructure. As companies race to build massive data centers, traditional equity funding may not suffice. Credit guarantees from a creditworthy partner like Nvidia can unlock significant capital.

For Anthropic, securing dedicated data center capacity is crucial as it competes with OpenAI and other AI labs. The company has emphasized safety and reliability, and a dedicated facility could enhance its ability to train and deploy models.

Nscale's deal with Anthropic would also bolster the UK's position in AI infrastructure. The UK government has been pushing to attract AI investment, and Nscale's growth could support those ambitions.

The news comes amid a broader surge in AI-related financing. Banks and investors are increasingly eager to fund AI projects, but they remain cautious about credit risk. Nvidia's guarantees could mitigate that risk, making such deals more attractive.

As the AI arms race intensifies, Nvidia's role as both supplier and financier will likely expand. The company's ability to shape the infrastructure landscape through financial tools is a testament to its strategic importance in the AI era.

However, regulators may take notice. Nvidia's growing influence over the AI supply chain could raise antitrust concerns, though no official inquiries have been announced.

For now, the talks between Nvidia and Nscale represent a significant development in AI infrastructure financing. If successful, it could set a precedent for other chipmakers and cloud providers to collaborate on large-scale projects.
