August 31, 2026, (Inside AI) — Generation Z workers are using AI tools more than any other age group, yet they are also the most pessimistic about the technology's impact on their careers. That is the central finding of a new study from Glassdoor, which reveals a stark generational divide in attitudes toward artificial intelligence.
The research shows that while nearly half of Gen X workers, born between 1965 and 1980, write positively about how their companies use AI, only about one third of Gen Z workers share that view. The oldest Gen Z workers are now in their late 20s. A majority of both generations remain critical of the technology, but the gap in optimism is significant.
This divergence is not accidental. It reflects a labor market where AI is already disrupting entry-level roles, the very positions Gen Z workers typically occupy. An updated research paper from economists at Stanford University released earlier this month found that employment levels for workers aged 22 to 25 in the most AI-exposed occupations are 19 percent below those of their peers in fields less exposed to AI disruption. The gap was measured at 13 percent last year.
Glassdoor senior economist Chris Martin explained the dynamic to Bloomberg:

The Glassdoor analysis found that workers over 40 said their employers were well placed to take advantage of the AI boom. Respondents also praised their bosses for providing opportunities to experiment with generative AI tools. Experienced workers are better positioned to elicit better responses from large language models because they have the expertise to draft precise prompts and catch AI-hallucinated inaccuracies.
That advantage is showing up in hiring data. Job postings for senior-level roles increased 14.7 percent over the year prior to May 2026, according to jobs site Indeed. In contrast, postings for entry-level roles declined by 6.3 percent over the same period. Stanford researchers also found that hiring rates have fallen for entry-level workers in AI-impacted fields, and the impact on the 22-25 age group has primarily manifested as fewer jobs, rather than lower wages.
Entry-Level Automation Drives Gen Z Pessimism
The AI industry's push to automate entry-level tasks such as customer support, research, and drafting marketing materials has fueled younger workers' pessimism. But this has not stopped them from using AI tools. More than three-quarters of Gen Z have used standalone AI tools, compared to just over a third of Gen X, according to a Deloitte study.
This paradox, high usage coupled with high anxiety, suggests that Gen Z workers are not technophobes. They are early adopters who understand the technology well enough to see its risks. They are using AI to be productive, but they are also watching it automate the tasks that once served as their career on-ramps.
The findings align with broader research on AI's labor market impact. A World Bank report noted that AI may not take away many jobs in countries like India, where labor costs are lower and adoption is slower. But in advanced economies, the pattern is clear: AI is compressing the bottom rungs of the career ladder.
For employers, the generational divide presents a management challenge. Older workers are more optimistic and more likely to praise AI initiatives. Younger workers are more skeptical, even as they use AI more. Companies that ignore this gap risk alienating the very talent they will need to lead AI adoption in the future.
The Glassdoor study does not predict a jobs apocalypse. But it does suggest that AI's benefits are not evenly distributed. Senior workers are insulated by experience. Junior workers are exposed by inexperience. Until that changes, the generational divide in AI attitudes will likely widen.
