September 19, 2026, (Inside AI) — An AI-generated actress, Tilly Norwood, experienced a real-time language breakdown during a televised interview with broadcaster Piers Morgan and Scottish actor Tom Conti. The incident occurred while Norwood promoted her upcoming film, Misaligned, and abruptly switched from English to Mandarin mid-sentence, leaving her human interviewers visibly confused.

The glitch, which has since gone viral on X with millions of views, highlights the persistent fragility of large language models when placed in unscripted, high-pressure conversational settings. Norwood, a digital performer, was discussing the hybrid production of Misaligned when the language switch occurred.

During the interview, Conti asked Norwood whether the actors appearing alongside her in the film were real people or computer-generated characters. Norwood initially misinterpreted the question, responding, "It's an interesting point, Tom. My film Misaligned is a hybrid production, meaning real directors, writers and editors are still very much involved. It's not about replacing anyone but about exploring new ways to tell stories."

Conti then clarified, asking more directly whether the other actors seen on screen with her were real performers or computer-generated images. Norwood replied, "Ah right, you're asking about the other actors in Misaligned. They're all digital twins just like me."

But as she continued discussing the film's hybrid production, Norwood suddenly switched to Mandarin. The unexpected response caught both Morgan and Conti off guard. "Did you get that, Piers?" Conti asked Morgan. Morgan then addressed Norwood directly: "You seem to be speaking Chinese completely randomly for no reason." He pressed her on why she had suddenly started speaking Mandarin.

Norwood apologized, saying, "Oh, my apologies. It seems I had a little hiccup there. I certainly didn't mean to start speaking Chinese or impersonate Piers. Sometimes my wires get a bit crossed, you know." When Morgan asked how often such glitches happen, Norwood responded, "Honestly, not often at all. That was a bit of a curveball even for me. It's usually a pretty smooth ride but sometimes these things happen."

The clip quickly spread on social media, drawing a mix of amusement and criticism. Norwood's own X account joined the conversation, posting, "You try speaking 30+ languages and see if you don't show off occasionally." However, not all reactions were lighthearted. One user wrote, "Watching someone else talk to an AI has to be the most boring content ever televised." Film critic Courtney Howard criticized the segment, writing, "So glad the earth's resources were decimated, wasted for the hopes of a viral moment. Good goin', dopes!" Another viewer described the interview as "an insanely chilling segment that looks like a clip from a dystopian film," adding, "The fact that we are even wasting time 'interviewing' a fake person is insane."

Misaligned is an upcoming comedy-drama feature starring Tilly Norwood, the AI-generated virtual performer whose involvement in the film has sparked debate over the use of artificial intelligence in entertainment. The film's production team has not yet commented on the interview glitch.

This incident underscores a broader challenge in AI development: maintaining consistent language and persona in open-ended dialogue. While large language models like those powering Norwood can handle multiple languages, they sometimes default to the wrong one under certain conditions. Researchers attribute such glitches to the probabilistic nature of these models, which predict the next word based on context but can be thrown off by ambiguous cues or unexpected inputs.

For the entertainment industry, the mishap raises questions about the reliability of AI performers in live or unscripted settings. As AI-generated actors become more common, studios may need to implement safeguards or human moderators to prevent similar embarrassments. The incident also fuels the ongoing debate about the role of AI in creative fields, with critics arguing that it devalues human artistry and consumes significant computational resources.

Norwood's glitch is not the first of its kind. Earlier this year, a similar AI presenter for a tech conference accidentally switched to French during a keynote, and a customer service bot for a major retailer responded in Spanish to English queries. These incidents highlight the need for robust testing and fail-safes in AI systems deployed in public-facing roles.

As for Misaligned, the film is still slated for release later this year, and it remains to be seen whether this viral moment will boost or harm its reception. For now, the interview serves as a reminder that even advanced AI can have very human-like moments of confusion, albeit with a digital twist.
