August 25, 2026, (Inside AI) — A humanoid robot named Tiangong Ultra sprinted 100 metres in 8.86 seconds on Tuesday at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing. The run happened in a semifinal heat, shattering its own opening-day mark of 9.39 seconds.

The time not only beat every human sprint ever recorded, it also extended the robot's lead over Usain Bolt's 9.58-second world record set in 2009. The machine's pace translates to an average speed of roughly 40.6 kilometres per hour.

Developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Centre, Tiangong Ultra is part of a new generation of bipedal machines built for dynamic locomotion rather than factory repetition. The competition itself is designed to push robotics beyond walking demos and into measurable athletic performance.

Unlike wheeled or quadrupedal robots, humanoid sprinters must manage balance, ground reaction forces, and limb coordination at extreme speeds. Running under 9 seconds requires actuators with high torque density, real-time control loops operating at kilohertz frequencies, and energy recovery systems that mimic human tendons.

The 8.86-second result is more than a publicity stunt. It signals that China is aggressively positioning itself in the race for general-purpose humanoid platforms. The same underlying control algorithms could translate to warehouse mobility, disaster response, and exoskeleton assistance.

Industry observers note that robot sprinting has progressed rapidly. In 2022, Agility Robotics' Cassie ran 100 metres in 24.73 seconds, a Guinness World Record at the time. Boston Dynamics' Atlas has demonstrated parkour and backflips but has not competed in timed sprints. Tiangong Ultra's time represents a step change in speed.

Still, questions remain about the conditions of the run. The track surface, wind assistance, and whether the robot used a tether or external power source have not been disclosed. Sprint times in robotics are not yet standardized the way human athletics are under World Athletics rules.

The World Humanoid Robot Games has emerged as a showcase for Chinese robotics firms seeking global attention. Previous events featured robots playing soccer, navigating obstacle courses, and performing manipulation tasks. The sprint event adds a quantifiable benchmark that is easy for the public to understand.

Beijing has identified humanoid robotics as a strategic industry, with municipal funding and policy support flowing to startups and research centres. The Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Centre is a key player, backed by local government and academic institutions.

The robot's name, Tiangong, echoes China's space station and reflects a broader national narrative of technological ambition. Whether the sprint record translates into commercial viability remains an open question, but the demonstration is a clear signal of intent.

For now, the 8.86-second mark stands as the fastest known 100-metre time by a bipedal robot. The competition continues this week, with finals expected to draw further improvements and possibly new challengers from international teams.
