Major Tech Companies Call for Defensive Surge Against AI-Driven Hacks

More than 100 major tech and financial companies issued a joint letter calling for a society-wide defensive surge against AI-driven cyberattacks, urging governments and industry to act before attacks become widespread.

August 28, 2026, (Inside AI) — More than 100 major technology and financial companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Broadcom, Capital One, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, General Motors, IBM, Mastercard, Oracle, Robinhood, Shopify, and Visa, issued a joint letter calling for a society-wide defensive surge against an impending wave of AI-driven cyberattacks.

The letter, released Thursday, warns that there is a limited window "to make our digital world much more secure" before AI-enabled attacks become widespread. It urges governments and industry leaders to bring the full weight of their technology, resources, and expertise to the effort.

"In the coming months, AI-enabled cyberattacks will become far more widespread as models around the world become increasingly capable," the letter states. It calls on governments to expedite trusted access programs that give certain organizations early access to powerful AI models, and for all other organizations to "make cyber defense an immediate leadership priority."

The signatories represent a broad cross-section of critical infrastructure, cloud services, financial systems, and AI development. Their collective warning signals a rare alignment among competitors on a shared security threat.

Why AI Changes the Cyber Threat Calculus

Traditional cyberattacks require skilled human operators to write malware, craft phishing emails, and probe defenses. Large language models can automate these tasks at scale, lowering the barrier to entry for attackers. A single model can generate thousands of unique phishing messages, adapt to security filters, and even write exploit code from public vulnerability descriptions.

Security researchers have already documented early cases. In 2025, a ransomware group used a publicly available model to translate its negotiation scripts into 20 languages, increasing victim payment rates. Another campaign used AI-generated voice clones to impersonate executives in wire fraud attempts.

The letter's emphasis on trusted access programs is notable. These programs, often run by AI labs in coordination with governments, give vetted organizations early access to frontier models. The signatories argue that defenders need the same tools as attackers, but with safeguards to prevent misuse.

A Five Eyes Warning Becomes Industry Consensus

In June, the "Five Eyes" intelligence alliance, comprising the U.S., Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, issued a rare joint statement warning that AI would "fundamentally transform" cybersecurity. That assessment now appears to have galvanized private-sector action.

The joint letter does not propose specific regulations or new laws. Instead, it frames the response as a collective operational priority. It asks organizations to treat cyber defense as a leadership issue, not just a technical one.

Inside AI could not independently verify the full list of signatories beyond those named in the letter. The letter's language suggests a coordinated effort to preempt regulatory fragmentation by demonstrating industry self-organization.

Some security experts caution that AI-enabled attacks are still evolving. "We are in the early stages of seeing what these models can do in the hands of determined adversaries," said a senior cybersecurity official who spoke on condition of anonymity. "The gap between current capabilities and worst-case scenarios is closing faster than many organizations realize."

The letter's call for expedited trusted access programs may face political hurdles. Critics argue that giving private companies early access to powerful models could concentrate advantage among a few firms. Supporters counter that the alternative is a slower, more fragmented defense.

The signatories include companies that compete directly in AI, cloud, and security markets. Their joint statement is unusual in an industry often marked by rivalries. It reflects a shared recognition that AI-driven threats could undermine trust in digital infrastructure broadly.

The letter does not set a deadline for action, but its tone is urgent. It describes a "limited amount of time" before the AI onslaught. That framing aligns with recent warnings from national cyber agencies about the accelerating pace of AI-enabled intrusion attempts.

As AI models become more capable and more accessible, the asymmetry between attackers and defenders may widen. The letter's signatories are betting that a coordinated, proactive defense can narrow that gap before it becomes unmanageable.
