June 17, 2026, (Inside AI) — The U.S. government confirmed in a federal court filing that Elon Musk’s Grok AI was used in military strikes against Iran during Operation Epic Fury. The disclosure came on June 15 in a legal brief defending gas turbines powering an xAI data center against an environmental lawsuit.

The Legal Bombshell That Exposed Grok’s Combat Role

The U.S. Department of Justice argued the NAACP lawsuit threatens national security by seeking to cut power to facilities supporting military AI. Pentagon AI chief Cameron Stanley testified under oath that Grok is integrated into Project Maven, the military’s AI targeting program.

Stanley stated that Maven Smart Systems (MSS) enabled forces to deploy over 2,000 munitions against 2,000 distinct targets within 96 hours. He credited the Grok Gov Model for dramatically boosting operational efficiency.

“Maven Smart Systems enabled US forces to deploy over 2,000 munitions to 2,000 distinct targets within 96 hours during Operation Epic Fury,” Stanley said.

From Claude to Grok: The Pentagon’s AI Pivot

Project Maven previously relied on Anthropic’s Claude model. In February, the U.S. terminated contracts with Anthropic after the firm refused to allow fully automated strikes or mass surveillance. The Pentagon then expanded AI contracts with Google, OpenAI, and xAI.

More than 600 Google employees protested the company’s involvement in classified military AI, citing lethal decision-making concerns. Despite the pivot, the government acknowledged in March that Claude was still used in the Iran conflict, highlighting a slow transition.

Environmental Fight Masks National Security Secrets

The NAACP lawsuit accuses xAI of operating dozens of gas turbines without permits, violating the Clean Air Act. The group claims pollution harms majority Black neighborhoods. xAI argues the turbines are temporary and mobile, exempt from regulations.

The DOJ’s intervention reveals the data center’s critical role in military operations. Shutting off power would disrupt Grok’s targeting capabilities, the brief contends.

Musk’s Corporate Chessboard and the IPO Windfall

Elon Musk merged xAI into SpaceX in February. SpaceX then completed the largest initial public offering in history on June 12, raising billions. The integration places Grok’s military work under a sprawling aerospace umbrella, complicating oversight.

Stanley’s testimony marks the first official confirmation of Grok’s direct role in lethal operations. The disclosure intensifies debates over AI in warfare and corporate accountability.
