Chinese Makers Accounted for More Than 97% of Global Humanoid Robot Shipments in H1 2026

Chinese manufacturers shipped over 97% of all humanoid robots globally in the first half of 2026, with AgiBot and Unitree leading the charge as industrial applications surged.

August 11, 2026, (Inside AI) — Chinese manufacturers captured over 97% of global humanoid robot shipments in the first half of 2026, a staggering figure that underscores the country's accelerating dominance in the physical AI market. Total global shipments reached approximately 19,100 units, a sharp increase from about 5,100 units in the same period last year.

Leading the charge, AgiBot shipped roughly 8,400 units, claiming 44% of the global total. Unitree followed with about 5,900 units. These two firms alone accounted for the vast majority of robots rolling off production lines. The data, reported by IT Home, signals a tectonic shift in the robotics industry, where Chinese companies are rapidly translating AI advances into hardware at scale.

The surge is not just about numbers. Industrial and commercial deployments drove more than 70% of shipments, up from around 50% a year earlier. This pivot from research labs to factory floors and service roles marks a critical maturation of the technology. Analysts project full-year shipments could hit 60,000 units, with the market expanding to 500,000 units by 2030.

From Lab Curiosity to Factory Staple

Just two years ago, humanoid robots were largely confined to carefully staged demonstrations. Today, they are welding, assembling, and patrolling in real-world settings. The rapid shift reflects both hardware cost declines and software breakthroughs in embodied AI. Chinese manufacturers have leveraged domestic supply chains and aggressive government support to outpace Western rivals in production volume.

Yet, the dominance raises questions about quality and autonomy. While shipment figures impress, they do not reveal how many robots are fully operational versus those in pilot programs. Western firms like Tesla and Boston Dynamics have emphasized dexterity and safe human interaction, areas where Chinese models may still lag. However, the sheer scale of deployment provides a data flywheel that could accelerate AI training and refinement.

Scale Breeds Intelligence, but Risks Loom

The concentration of manufacturing in China also poses geopolitical risks. Export controls on advanced chips and AI models could disrupt production. Additionally, safety standards for humanoid robots remain nascent globally. A flood of low-cost units without rigorous testing could lead to accidents that stall adoption.

For now, the numbers tell a story of relentless execution. AgiBot and Unitree have turned prototypes into products faster than many thought possible. The next test is whether they can maintain reliability and safety as volumes climb toward the projected half-million mark by decade's end.
